**************************
Last night was our holiday party and a party for Erma, as she is planning to desert us...rather, move to Florida in the relatively near future.  Here are a few of the photos I took from last night's party:

**********************************************
Thursday's Late Edition, from Dave:

Didn't have a chance to get the Thursday's newz in to the typesetter and get it printed in time for last night, but anyhooo.

Nice work from Ken, Jennifer, Carol today. Looks like we are moving away from the older  martingales to the new chain and nylon type, which are bit easier to adjust and put on. So, we will keep using the older till the resupply comes in, which will be soon. At times, the martingales were put on wrong and became just a tight collar, so this is good for people and paws.

Keep in mind the very housebroken dogs. Don't let them be last guy out. That's Rocco, B side (you might want to bring a folding chair when he peeps in the morning! Gee whiz!!), and Coral too, Bside #16.

Thursday's line up:  2-Nikki 4-Adam 5-Benjamischief 6-McGee 7-Lincoln 8- DaisyMae.

Daisymae hasn't had a lotta outdoor time, so i wanted her to get in the mix. She walks good, just a nice hounddog. She looks like she could have been Jed Clampett's dog on the Beverly Hillbillies. (Young volunteers, go google it or whatever you do all day on the computer!!!)

Gracie has made a claim to the meet and greet, and at noon, she gives you the, "WHAAAT??? Noon already? But I'm a littttle comfy now!!"

Please, keep in mind and adhere to the COLOR codes for walkable dogs. GREEN, Spike, Sadie, Tia, Yellow, etc. etc. Even if you had that dog out yesterday (by mistake, or whatever,) stick to your level, because there is a reason--maybe not obvious, but there is a reason--for the color designation.

Hey, I know you want to 'move up,'1,but take your time, get confident and used to it, before another volunteer clears you up to yellow. Heck, I was a green walker till last month when FINALLY Casey moved me up to DARK GREEN!!! C'mon Casey FUR REAL!!!???

Wasn't that a nice little event last night for Erma at Lefty's? Nice turnout, good time, nice recognition for a lady who has pushed those pups out the door!! But seriously, not pushed, but guided them to appropriate families; that's the real talent. So they find a good family, a nice fit, and they stay there, all involved happy. And then that translates to word of mouth, to other families looking to adopt a cat or dog. "Hey, you gotta go over to SOCAF; the animals and people are terrific!" (Note- Legal just advised me I have to CLARIFY that the PEOPLE aren't up for adoption!!",  just dogs and cats!!)

And that afternoon shift is a big time help for adoptions, because at times, you have a dog or two that just doesn't show well inside, but is a real charmer, a real at ease dog with people and other dogs, outside, out front, on the bench, or wandering around with an afternoon volunteer. I'm usually not there afternoons, but I've had people ask me if that was MY dog on the leash, because whoever it was, was just being a good old boy. That gets dogs adopted.

So, find your niche here, and do it. Because there's gonna be a hole in the schedule, like the Grand Canyon, when Erma actually heads out to sunny Florida! You sure about going, Erma? I hear they got  ALLIGATORS down there walking around your yard!! Yikes!!!
Well, you've handled  Benjamin, Adam, and the rest of those bouncing bumbles and pitties; you can handle a gator or two, NO PROBLEM!!!!  We miss ya already!! Dave (and everybody)

Oops!  Forgot a few things:

A couple of new arrivals that I forgot about: Champ, a young, maybe a year old medium-sized Border Collie mix, white, with black and brown markings. A lovely lad out on the move, but an energetic guy getting harnessed up. He walks terrific  Not a bad bone in his handsome body, just take your time, maybe take him into meet and greet to hook up, because he's excited to go, loves people. A real nice friendly dog with a bit of a bounce in him. You'll like him. If you had to design and mail order a nice, medium-sized, good-looking, smart dog, this is what would fall out of the box when they delivered it.
And the new boy, NOAH, A brown, blue, silver, with the deep down brindle showing. All you have to do is to remember LOLA!!!  That's his color, the type that changes in the sunlight, a nice strong, but pretty good walker. WATCH though!!  He has a sore ear. I harnessed him (as I definitely always prefer a harness rather than 2 martingales) but did it delicately, so it wouldn't annoy him. He's got a body like Blizzard, a real Adonis (again, young volunteers, ya gotta google!!) like a Greek god as I remember. I have to admit, I was a bit intimidated at first because Trish asked me if I'd get him out, but with a big eyed look on her face and words of  "BE CAREFUL!! HE HAS NO COLLAR ON!! AND A SORE EAR, and might not like being hugged."   Gee whiz!! Ok, ok, I'll do it. He was fine. And I knew he would be, as the past couple days I walked by him, he was calm as could be, took a treat nicely, and gave me the impression of goodness. Hopefully, Trish doesn't have me pulling a tiger's tooth up at the zoo, or checking a hippo for a sore throat or anything next week. I gotta keep my  knight's suit of armor hung up in the closet for these moments.

Oh, yesterday was 6 below in Vermont, so of course, next week I'll be up the skiing for the week, so, please, toss an hour or two in there to make up my absence.

Now, the'll be only ONE wrinkly old man around the place for a couple of days..... ROCCO!!!

Dave

Dog Walking Schedule:

The minimum number of walkers needed by 9:00 a.m. is two in order to handle the task of getting dogs out for their first morning walk.

Volunteers are really needed early in the morning, 9:00 a.m. every day!  Even if   you can only help for a half hour or an hour, it would help.
The dogs are color coded.  New volunteers may NOT walk Red dogs.  Please pay attention to the color coding and the cage cards.  Red walkers' names in red type.
***************************
Important:  Please do not sign up for a shift if you aren't sure you can make it!  Other volunteers come in if there isn't enough coverage.  Some people have signed up for shifts and have been either late or not shown up at all.  We really need at least two people early in the morning--9:00--to get everyone out.

*Please make sure you notify me of your walking plans by Sunday night each week!
If you don't know your availability a week in advance and see we need help the next day, just send me an e-mail by 10 p.m. the night before, and I will put you on the schedule and notify the shelter.

Maximum number of walkers in the morning is 6 at one time, 4 in the afternoon.
Please make sure no dogs are left outside or in the meet-and-greet room when the last volunteer leaves.

REMINDER:  Every Tuesday is surgery day.  Find out who is having surgery when you come to walk the dogs.

To All Dog Walkers:
Please pay attention to the DO NOT WALK SIGNS!
If a card says do not walk, always ask management
before assuming the dog is walkable. This can change daily
depending on the dog's progress or health; therefore,

it is very important to always ask first.

FOSTER HELP NEEDED!!!
From Susan:
We are looking for volunteers to foster cats that need medical attention.  Medicine is usually administered from between 10-14 days.  This is not a very difficult thing to do.  You need a separate room to keep the cat away from your pets.
******************************************************
KITTEN FOSTERS NEEDED

If interested in helping out, please contact the shelter at socaf@ochd.org.
From Susan:

To all volunteers who wish to socialize with the cats when I am not there, PLEASE take only one cat out at a time.  Cats that should not be taken out have an X with a circle around the X.  These cats need time to adjust to the shelter.
Thank You, Susan
