Two Simple Words, from Dave:
Reading the Friday night issue of the newz, did it JUMP off the page to all of you as it did to me?? I would be willing to bet it did, two little, yet huge words regarding the Maharajah of Mischief, the Prince of Tomfoolery, the Great Gazoo of Goofyness, BENJAMIN!!!--"HAS RESCUE!!!
Our little (well, not sooo little), Great White Shark of a dog, BENJAMIN, has now been officially issued his "PROPERTY OF SOCAF" T-shirt!!
Which means. of course, that clickity clacking sound you have been hearing, maybe not so faintly in the distance, is the sound of the amazing Rescue Squad, hammering away at their computer keyboards and tapping out phone numbers on their I phones, focused on the task at hand, getting Chubby McBisquit a place to go. Wow, just great to even think about!!
Does he need a dose of manners, a spoonful of structure, a dollop of discipline, a week or two, or three, of Charm School? Yeah, sure, but don't we all? At least i hope we do!! It means we're enjoying ourselves. But for all that took the time to get him outside, to come in just for him, to actually start WALKING him (and who thought that was possible a month or two ago?!!?), nice going, good work. Yeah, he's hard to deal with at times. Yeah, he's a lotta work; yeah, he ain't the easiest dog to deal with. He's got a lot of energy and a gigantic personality, but gee whiz, all these kind of dogs--the Lolas, the Blizzards, the Apaches--they just have that something that you don't get to see every day. (Haha! thank goodness!) either with the dogs here, or our animals at home. The tougher the task, the more rewarding the result. Well, this one's gonna taste sweeter than honey when we see his big bumble self go walking out the front door, and sometime soon!!!
Sometimes, when I'm there doing a task, walking, etc., I literally stop and think, "How lucky is it that I get to do this? Who gets to meet these characters?"
You know what? WE DO!!!!
Dave

Dog Walking Schedule:
The minimum number of walkers needed by 9:00 a.m. is two in order to handle the task of getting dogs out for their first morning walk.
Volunteers are really needed early in the morning, 9:00 a.m. every day! Even if you can only help for a half hour or an hour, it would help.
The dogs are color coded. New volunteers may NOT walk Red dogs. Please pay attention to the color coding and the cage cards. Red walkers' names in red type.
***************************
Important: Please do not sign up for a shift if you aren't sure you can make it! Other volunteers come in if there isn't enough coverage. Some people have signed up for shifts and have been either late or not shown up at all. We really need at least two people early in the morning--9:00--to get everyone out.
*Please make sure you notify me of your walking plans by Sunday night each week!
If you don't know your availability a week in advance and see we need help the next day, just send me an e-mail by 10 p.m. the night before, and I will put you on the schedule and notify the shelter.
Maximum number of walkers in the morning is 6 at one time, 4 in the afternoon.
Please make sure no dogs are left outside or in the meet-and-greet room when the last volunteer leaves.

Rabies Clinic is the 2nd. and 4th. Wednesday of the month. Dogs must be back inside by 10:30 on Clinic days.
To All Dog Walkers:
Please pay attention to the DO NOT WALK SIGNS! If a card says do not walk, always ask management before assuming the dog is walkable. This can change daily depending on the dog's progress or health; therefore, it is very important to always ask first.
***From Cathy: After walking the dogs on the salt covered roads and parking lot, we should wipe their paws with a towel to keep them from ingesting it and getting sick***

FOSTER HELP NEEDED!!!
From Susan:
We are looking for volunteers to foster cats that need medical attention. Medicine is usually administered from between 10-14 days. This is not a very difficult thing to do. You need a separate room to keep the cat away from your pets.
******************************************************
KITTEN FOSTERS NEEDED
If interested in helping out, please contact the shelter at socaf@ochd.org.
From Susan:
To all volunteers who wish to socialize with the cats when I am not there, PLEASE take only one cat out at a time. Cats that should not be taken out have an X with a circle around the X. These cats need time to adjust to the shelter.
Thank You, Susan

Special Thanks to Jennifer for taking these pics and for keeping us updated as to which cats are where.

Hi Dog Walkers, If you will, please get the days and times you will be able to walk dogs in the upcoming week to Joanne Eckert no later than Sunday night each week. I need to turn in the schedule to the HD on Monday mornings. Thanks so much for volunteering your time for the animals! It is greatly appreciated!!

Love our dogs? Then adopt one as a Shelter Pup and FRIENDS will get a portion of the sale! Shelter Pups has turned a select group of dogs from our shelter into amazing and realistic plush pups. Check out Casper and wonderful Sherman! It's a great way to “adopt” one of our dogs and help our volunteer FRIENDS group at the same time. Shelter Pups can also make customs of your very own dog. Check it out and bring one of our dogs home as a Shelter Pup!
