Linda Cook was named Volunteer of the Year at the Annual Meeting last Saturday!

Photos were taken of each volunteer in attendance to be used as a directory so everyone can identify a fellow volunteer.

Elvis knows how to cope with a rainy, chilly day.  From Dawn

From Joan:
As volunteers we are exposed to some amazing experiences with shelter animals. Over the past 7 1/2 years I have grown, emotionally and personally, because of my involvement with the animals that find themselves at our shelter.  I've learned patience; quietly  sitting in kennels with shy or frightened dogs, realizing that it's not always words that heal heal, but simply a gentle touch or look, an offering of food, or a lap to curl up in. I've learned kindness;  how it will gradually gain trust in a dog that may have had nothing but unhappiness in their life. I've learned that offering love can bring a tail up and encourage it to wag.

Being a dog lover, though, wasn't enough. I wanted to learn how to connect more deeply, and reach the ones that seemed hopeless. It was a challenge offered me by every dog in the shelter, and one I gladly accepted. This is what lead me to become a dog trainer.  I may not have complete control over their environment, but  I could help them better cope with shelter life  by providing simple comforts and a walk. Providing some obedience training would not only help to give them confidence, but make them more adoptable.
My challenge later expanded to the dogs that had been adopted and needed help adjusting to a new home and new environment. Offering training at the home was the next obvious step. I wanted to help to families better understand their new pet and their behaviors, and help increase the bond between human and dog.
I have helped many families and adopted dogs, but there was one I was not very sure of, and that was the adoption of Molly, our Joyce.  Molly is a young, active, sweet Pit bull mix with lots of energy and love to share.  She was adopted by an older couple, Gus and Betty, over 2 months ago.  I was there that day, and knowing Molly's energy level, I was not confident that they could handle her. I tried to convince them that this dog was not for them, but  Gus was insistent. So I offered a free training session to help them.  I admit I misjudged these people.  They have such an incredible connection and love for Molly, they are the best pet parents I could have hoped for.  Molly wants for nothing, she lives in a beautiful home,  has a comfy bed, lots of toys, and gets plenty of exercise.  Gus and Betty have implemented all the training I have provided, and Molly has proved to be a quick learner. Gus frequently calls me to brag about how smart Molly is, how she learned to wait at the door, how she learned to focus on him, and how well she learned to "leave it".  Gus insists that they got the best shelter dog in the world, and they can't imagine life without her.  Gus walks Molly 2 miles every day.  He also takes her to a fenced in field where she can run, and they play hide and seek.  Molly does not like it when Gus is out of her sight and she comes running back to find him.  Betty and Molly also have a very strong bond, and Molly follows her everywhere around the house, but is just as content to lay at Betty's feet. They have continued with Molly's training and want her to be the best dog she can be.  Molly has an amazing home with Gus and Betty, and I know her life will continue to grow to be more wonderful.  Molly is the devoted companion they need in their lives, and Molly has the people she needs. I am privileged to share in the special happiness that develops between family and dog.
This is our ultimate reward for being volunteers.
Our souls and our passion are strong enough to improve the lives of shelter animals. Our hearts are replenished with each bond we make, and with every adoption we have helped achieve.

Our Pet Food Pantry is cur
rently located at the Ocean Community Church (72W) on Wednesday mornings between 10 am and 12 noon.  The Church volunteers are thrilled to have dog and cat food to distribute.  Please pass around to friends and family that we need ongoing pet food donations (smaller bags, if possible, would be helpful). Please drop any food at the Shelter.  If you have any questions, please call Claire at 609-549-5243.

April $5 Challenge - 1,000 New iGive Members a Day Mean $5 Donations for Friends of Southern Ocean County Animal Shelter

Spring is finally here. To celebrate, we'll donate $5 per new member supporting Friends of Southern Ocean County Animal Shelter in the month of April.  No purchase necessary.  In other words, for free.  If a new member supports a different group, we'll donate $5 to that group.

Here's the challenge.  iGive must get at least 1,000 new members a day (supporting any cause, it doesn't need to be yours) in April. They need to try the free and optional iGive Button through 7/15/14.

In our best months, we'll get 1,000 to 1,500 people joining each day.  What we're hoping is that you'll tell all of your friends, even those friends who might support causes or charities different from your favorite. That'll make April a Best Month.

Why share with your friends? -

When they shop, they'll help Friends of Southern Ocean County Animal Shelter or their own favorite cause.  Why not let them take advantage of over 1,400 stores that want to help?
The average shopper is raising over $30 - $100 a year for their cause ... all for free.
It's simple and automatic..
Five bucks free, just for trying us out.
The more iGive members, the better the deals we can get from stores.
Spread your iGive link everywhere (Facebook's a great way, but Twitter, e-mail, blogs, bulletin boards, and handouts all work).

Dog Walking Schedule:
The minimum number of walkers needed by 9:00 a.m. is two in order to handle the task of getting dogs out for their first morning walk.

Volunteers are really needed early in the morning, 9:00 a.m. every day!  Even if   you can only help for a half hour or an hour, it would help.
The dogs are color coded.  New volunteers may NOT walk Red dogs.  Please pay attention to the color coding and the cage cards.  Red walkers' names in red type.
***************************
Important:  Please do not sign up for a shift if you aren't sure you can make it!  Other volunteers come in if there isn't enough coverage.  Some people have signed up for shifts and have been either late or not shown up at all.  We really need at least two people early in the morning--9:00--to get everyone out.
*Please try to notify me of your walking plans by Sunday night each week, if possible. You may also call, e-mail, or text me at 709-4140 by 8:30 a.m. on the day you wish to come in. I will then put you on the schedule and notify the shelter.  You may come in as long as there aren't already the maximum number of walkers on that particular day or shift.
Maximum number of walkers in the morning is 6 at one time, 4 in the afternoon.
Please make sure no dogs are left outside or in the meet-and-greet room when the last volunteer leaves.
REMINDER:  Every Tuesday is surgery day.  Find out who is having surgery when you come to walk the dogs.
New Red Walker Policy:  New red walkers must be accompanied by another red walker for a period of several weeks.  New red walkers have a double asterisk by their names.

KITTEN FOSTERS NEEDED

If interested in helping out, please contact the shelter at socaf@ochd.org.
From Susan:

To all volunteers who wish to socialize with the cats when I am not there, PLEASE take only one cat out at a time.  Cats that should not be taken out have an X with a circle around the X.  These cats need time to adjust to the shelter.
Thank You, Susan
