Thursday's Multi-Layered News, from Dave:
Woah, I thought that Tess had it cold yesterday, after my Tuesday chill, but today, yikes!!! It was 14 degrees when i left the house and hit the road. Let me say three magic words that worked out well today, and hope you all consider this, FLANNEL LINED JEANS!!!!. Oh, yeah, get a pair!!!! Toasty!!! Like wearing a Bear rug inside your jeans, not that I know how that would exactly work out, but Carharrt, and Eddie Bauer Outlet have them.
And the power of layers, you will be okay out there. Had 5 on myself, and I actually took the top flannel jacket off for the last ten minutes in " Benji's Fun House." By noon, it warmed up to 27, and at least I was properly dressed for Costco's walk-in cooler, where the fruit is. You ever walk in there?? Holy cow, it's colder in there than outside!!!
We didn't see the green jacket that McGee had on, maybe in the laundry, so he got to wear the red one, same style. He looked great in it, nice contrast to his black and white coloring. What a good dog. Cara, fashionable in her Woolrich (good brand!) green/brown corduroy, like a little runway model!! The little gal, Bamber, seen in a red nylon, fleece lined ensemble, cute as a bug! Cleo, wow, a stunner in her green, burgundy plaid jacket, looked like she just left the Fashion Institute of Technology, NYC!! And Benjamin, no, not in a sweater, he just LOOKS like a little gray flannel suit wearing dog!! Or a tuxedo ??
Good work, Janet, Lisa E, and thanks to Pat D, who came in to take Sparkles, Dachshund, to the vet, who had on a red and white sweater too!)
New dog, run #3, A side, looks like a Hound/Pit mix, brindle in color, hound type face and head, young, 7 months, from Nocaf. Needs some training, little jumpy at the start. He wants to fool on the walk, but settles in, likes to snuggle, has to be corrected a bit for puppyness. A good young dog who appears to like dogs, too. Nice sized, you'll like him.
Even though it's cold, if you put out say, McGee, in run# 2, and Cara, Cody, or Cleo even, just stick around to supervise and mix it with the both of them, alternate playing, and run playtime. This way, you don't go off on a walk and leave them alone. Had Cleo out in #4, did this for awhile, giving her a chance to get a feel for being out there too.
Oh, what is the fascination with the ice out of the water pails?? I knocked them out and you would have thought that I gave them a gallon of HaagenDaz!!! Cleo was working it like an Italian Ice!! Benjamin too, 20 degrees and they gotta fool with ice!!?? Oh, and Benjie?? Forgot that the other day, walking thru the trails after the "balloon incident", he grabbed a pine cone and was so goofy with it, throwing it in the air, etc. Then of course, he flung it and it was lost, He found another one in 2 seconds, and you could see the gears turning in his big head, Like "HEY!!! The woods are FULL of these??!!!! Did ya know that??" Ahh, yeah, Benj, I am aware of that. Ooooh boy!!! Dave

Dog Walking Schedule:
The minimum number of walkers needed by 9:00 a.m. is two in order to handle the task of getting dogs out for their first morning walk.
Volunteers are really needed early in the morning, 9:00 a.m. every day! Even if you can only help for a half hour or an hour, it would help.
The dogs are color coded. New volunteers may NOT walk Red dogs. Please pay attention to the color coding and the cage cards. Red walkers' names in red type.
***************************
Important: Please do not sign up for a shift if you aren't sure you can make it! Other volunteers come in if there isn't enough coverage. Some people have signed up for shifts and have been either late or not shown up at all. We really need at least two people early in the morning--9:00--to get everyone out.
*Please make sure you notify me of your walking plans by Sunday night each week!
If you don't know your availability a week in advance and see we need help the next day, just send me an e-mail by 10 p.m. the night before, and I will put you on the schedule and notify the shelter.
Maximum number of walkers in the morning is 6 at one time, 4 in the afternoon.
Please make sure no dogs are left outside or in the meet-and-greet room when the last volunteer leaves.

Rabies Clinic is the 2nd. and 4th. Wednesday of the month. Dogs must be back inside by 10:30 on Clinic days.
To All Dog Walkers:
Please pay attention to the DO NOT WALK SIGNS! If a card says do not walk, always ask management before assuming the dog is walkable. This can change daily depending on the dog's progress or health; therefore, it is very important to always ask first.

FOSTER HELP NEEDED!!!
From Susan:
We are looking for volunteers to foster cats that need medical attention. Medicine is usually administered from between 10-14 days. This is not a very difficult thing to do. You need a separate room to keep the cat away from your pets.
******************************************************
KITTEN FOSTERS NEEDED
If interested in helping out, please contact the shelter at socaf@ochd.org.
From Susan:
To all volunteers who wish to socialize with the cats when I am not there, PLEASE take only one cat out at a time. Cats that should not be taken out have an X with a circle around the X. These cats need time to adjust to the shelter.
Thank You, Susan
SOCAF's Gallery of Glorious Cats
Special Thanks to Jennifer for taking these pics and for keeping us updated as to which cats are where.

Hi Dog Walkers, If you will, please get the days and times you will be able to walk dogs in the upcoming week to Joanne Eckert no later than Sunday night each week. I need to turn in the schedule to the HD on Monday mornings. Thanks so much for volunteering your time for the animals! It is greatly appreciated!!

Love our dogs? Then adopt one as a Shelter Pup and FRIENDS will get a portion of the sale! Shelter Pups has turned a select group of dogs from our shelter into amazing and realistic plush pups. Check out Casper and wonderful Sherman! It's a great way to “adopt” one of our dogs and help our volunteer FRIENDS group at the same time. Shelter Pups can also make customs of your very own dog. Check it out and bring one of our dogs home as a Shelter Pup!

From SOCAF Management:
All dogs need to be walked with two leashes at all times, whether they are being walked from the pen to their runs, or just a few feet. No excuses, please!
The dogs must be on county property at all times when being walked. They cannot be walked IN the street or across the street.
Smoking is not allowed while walking dogs.
NEW: When walking dogs, please do not allow dogs to jump up onto any vehicles.
**********************************************************
TO ALL VOLUNTEERS:
If you see a dog limping, notice a lump, blood in the stool, etc., anything out of the ordinary, or if there is an incident with the dog, be sure to notify the supervisors, document the incident, and put it into the dog's file, keeping a copy for yourself.
