Thursday's Update from Dave:
A day late and an update short, but anyway, hey Happy Birthday to the foundation of the volunteer walking program, a foundation like brick and mortar. There are those who" talk the talk", and a bunch who 'walk the walk', and we who walk still (and take care of all those in the cat room, too) learned a bunch from a person who showed us "inspiration through perspiration," so happy birthday. I hope you are well,
Yesterday, even though the B side is jammed, there are rescues on the horizon, hopefully very soon. My stubborn little donkey friend, Olive; she really bounces when you get her out, less and less carrying back. She likes dogs so that's always a huge plus for any dog there. Got a few B siders out for photos and introductions.
Hey, be aware: Lulu and Casey Jones are look-a-likes, so, be aware. KNOW WHO YOU'VE GOT; that's job #1 and Job # 2, is, well, of course, number 2, if you get the drift!!
Had the amusing, entertaining, and fun-filled task and opportunity to have a morning with 3 of the most lovable pitties/pit mix you could imagine (that's all pitties, I know, but wow, this crowd!!). The fabulous Butch, who should really be named " Sugarheartedsweetiemushtotally goodboy" or something close to that; what a gallant lad!! He just is such a nice, handsome, sweet, young, suede-coated sweetheart of a young dog, . And then there's that cannonball of tomfoolery, the ready and raring to go locomotive of love, the awesomely marked, black and white, Angie. She's gonna be a terrific dog, but she's such a soooo pittapuppy, funny, playful, mischief machine. I wanna gobble her up, ooh, what an impish little goofy pup. Pretty spectacular in the looks dept as well. And of course, to round out the crew, that little hyena-looking Kisses, who is a smushiedoodle. You just want to grab her and SMACK!!! a big kiss going both ways, to her and from her. She's a little camouflaged pittie, a doll. When you get the chance to walk in and walk some dogs like that, well some days are better than others. The pay around here? not great, but the benefits, I tell ya, who else gets to do this??
Also, Had Guinness outside. He's adding weight, which is good, and I used the green sweater on him. He didn't mind, just doesn't have the body that stays warm out without it. He has a little pep in the step too! I never figured a Doberman for the playful type, but he startled me with the play bow and all. Lanie didn't love her sweater, but i think it was due to the fit; it was too big. Fussy lady, that one!!
All righty, that's it. Good work yesterday, Carol, Ken, and Bri. See ya out there. Dave

There are going to be far too many available dogs for me to show you all of the pictures I've taken over the past couple of weeks, but here are at least a couple of each dog:
Barry, Beagle
Casey Jones
Olive, Bull Terrier
Butch, Pit bull puppy
Guinness, Doberman
Bow Wow, Yorkie. First two were before Fran got her hands on him.
After a cleanup. Kisses Owen Nikki Dora and Rascal Dora **************************************************************** |

Hi Dog Walkers, If you will, please get the days and times you will be able to walk dogs in the upcoming week to Joanne Eckert no later than Sunday night each week. I need to turn in the schedule to the HD on Monday mornings. Thanks so much for volunteering your time for the animals! It is greatly appreciated!!

Love our dogs? Then adopt one as a Shelter Pup and FRIENDS will get a portion of the sale! Shelter Pups has turned a select group of dogs from our shelter into amazing and realistic plush pups. Check out Casper and wonderful Sherman! It's a great way to “adopt” one of our dogs and help our volunteer FRIENDS group at the same time. Shelter Pups can also make customs of your very own dog. Check it out and bring one of our dogs home as a Shelter Pup!

TO ALL VOLUNTEERS:
If you see a dog limping, notice a lump, blood in the stool, etc., anything out of the ordinary, or if there is an incident with the dog, be sure to notify the supervisors, document the incident, and put it into the dog's file, keeping a copy for yourself.
********************************************************
Dog Walking Schedule:
Please check the dog-walking schedule below.
There are many days and time slots with little or no coverage.
Please e-mail me with the days and times you are able to cover.
If no one can cover, the dogs will either not get out in the morning or have to go back inside early on those days.
The minimum number of walkers needed by 9:00 a.m. is two in order to handle the task of getting dogs out for their first morning walk.
Volunteers are really needed early in the morning, 9:00 a.m. every day! Even if you can only help for a half hour or an hour, it would help.
The dogs are color coded. New volunteers may NOT walk Red dogs. Please pay attention to the color coding and the cage cards. Red walkers' names in red type.
***************************
Important: Please do not sign up for a shift if you aren't sure you can make it! Other volunteers come in if there isn't enough coverage. Some people have signed up for shifts and have been either late or not shown up at all. We really need at least two people early in the morning--9:00--to get everyone out.
*Please make sure you notify me of your walking plans by Sunday night each week!
If you don't know your availability a week in advance and see we need help the next day, just send me an e-mail by 10 p.m. the night before, and I will put you on the schedule and notify the shelter.
Maximum number of walkers in the morning is 6 at one time, 4 in the afternoon.

To All Dog Walkers:
Please pay attention to the DO NOT WALK SIGNS!
If a card says do not walk, always ask management
before assuming the dog is walkable. This can change daily
depending on the dog's progress or health; therefore,
it is very important to always ask first.

FOSTER HELP NEEDED!!!
From Susan:
We are looking for volunteers to foster cats that need medical attention. Medicine is usually administered from between 10-14 days. This is not a very difficult thing to do. You need a separate room to keep the cat away from your pets.
******************************************************
KITTEN FOSTERS NEEDED
If interested in helping out, please contact the shelter at socaf@ochd.org.
From Susan:
To all volunteers who wish to socialize with the cats when I am not there, PLEASE take only one cat out at a time. Cats that should not be taken out have an X with a circle around the X. These cats need time to adjust to the shelter.
Thank You, Susan

Special Thanks to Jennifer for taking these pics and for keeping us updated as to which cats are where.
