Some Sunday Thoughts from Dave:

Just a quick note about Saturday's news:  Wow, 10 animals out the door!  How great was that, both adopted and to rescues.  You guys just tipped the building over and shook them out the front door, it seems!  Nice work by the behind the scenes "Rescue Squad." (You guys should have cool t-shirts made up with a neat logo on it, like swat or  something on them!)  So, thanks to the team with a dream, the guys who work the phones, the computers, the websites and contact, then arrange and drive, animals to where they need to be. To those adopted and rescued I can imagine, in their eyes, you should all have a big  "S" on your chest, ala Superman (and woman).

And to those new volunteers, if walking wears you out, or you are not as comfortable or confident doing it, take your time, give it a chance, work/walk with a senior volunteer. Don't give up on it. Yeah, it can be cold or rainy or whatever, but you will gain knowledge and proficiency as you go. Also, as you can see in the newsletter, there is so much more to do, so many different things to get involved with. Find your niche, and your enjoyment will grow. Maybe it's networking to  match up people with the available animals, or grooming the unkempt little ones that come stumbling in, make a video or snap some good photos to share,  or the task of driving to the rescue sites, or walking on Thursdays so when I do the tour, I don't feel guilty that dogs are in the outside runs, but not getting tuckered out on walks, and, of course, the bake sales, off-site events, Petsmart cat program, as well as fostering. There's a ton of stuff to do, so stick with it. You will find a spot and fill it.  And don't worry too much about cold. When you shovel the last night's snowfall of 19" out of an outdoor run, ya can warm up rather quickly, especially from laughing at dogs that play in the snow!!  Be a part of that to earn your  "9-99 degree Merit Badge ". (Well, there really ISN'T one, but we 'll know who you are!)

Layer up, tuck a pair of leather work gloves in your pocket, wear good shoes, saddle up  and enjoy the ride!!  Tell someone a funny or cute story about how your day went down there, and enjoy the wide-eyed looks you get. Nothing beats reading a newslettter like yesterday's, and that's what you are a part of!!!

VOLUNTEER PRIDE!! ROAR!!!    Dave

Late Edition from Dave:

Holy Toledo, you just finish crowing about the revolving doors being blown off the hinges, and whammo!  Did someone forget to batten down the front door, or what?? 5 more "mutts on the move!!"  Hey!! There are some wonderful felines here to be moved too: a Siberian Tiger, a Himalayan Snow Leopard, a Bengal Tiger, a Puma , a Panther, a Catamount, a  Cougar , a Bobcat, and if if they're all gone when you get there, oh well, just scoop up some way better than the average cats that are there!!! Mooove them Kitties tooo!!! Spread the word.

Good for the lovable Laney and the rest. Heck , I hardly had a chance with Owen, just took him out for photos. That's the risk you run if you miss a day or two; woofs will disappear, which is good stuff.

Again, as always, i know there is so much to do on that LBI and Beach Haven West, just to touch on locally. Those of our staff, volunteers, and people we know, stay healthy, keep us advised, and  though I send off a relatively cheery dognewz, we all know and still are involved in the recovery on smaller, local levels. Help your neighbors, keep the food pantries stocked, and if this storm taught us one thing, it's that your neighbors are more than that now. They're people to be concerned for and help out, to share with. One day it could be the other way around. So stay safe and warm. Dave

***********EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY***********
All volunteers must wear either their ID badge or a volunteer T-shirt.
************************************************
Green walkers, please look for volunteers with the red dot on their badge.  They will help you with anything you need.
****************************************************************
From SOCAF Management:
All dogs need to be walked with two leashes at all times, whether they are being walked from the pen to their runs, or just a few feet.  No excuses, please!

The dogs must be on county property at all times when being walked.  They cannot be walked IN the street or across the street.

Smoking is not allowed while walking dogs.

NEW:  When walking dogs, please do not allow dogs to jump up onto any vehicles.
**********************************************************
TO ALL VOLUNTEERS:
If you see a dog limping, notice a lump, blood in the stool, etc., anything out of the ordinary, or if there is an incident with the dog, be sure to notify the supervisors, document the incident, and put it into the dog's file, keeping a copy for yourself.
********************************************************

Dog Walking Schedule:

The minimum number of walkers needed by 9:00 a.m. is two in order to handle the task of getting dogs out for their first morning walk.

Volunteers are really needed early in the morning, 9:00 a.m. every day!  Even if   you can only help for a half hour or an hour, it would help.
The dogs are color coded.  New volunteers may NOT walk Red dogs.  Please pay attention to the color coding and the cage cards.  Red walkers' names in red type.
***************************
Important:  Please do not sign up for a shift if you aren't sure you can make it!  Other volunteers come in if there isn't enough coverage.  Some people have signed up for shifts and have been either late or not shown up at all.  We really need at least two people early in the morning--9:00--to get everyone out.

*Please make sure you notify me of your walking plans by Sunday night each week!
If you don't know your availability a week in advance and see we need help the next day, just send me an e-mail by 10 p.m. the night before, and I will put you on the schedule and notify the shelter.

Maximum number of walkers in the morning is 6 at one time, 4 in the afternoon.
Please make sure no dogs are left outside or in the meet-and-greet room when the last volunteer leaves.

REMINDER:  Every Tuesday is surgery day.  Find out who is having surgery when you come to walk the dogs.

To All Dog Walkers:
Please pay attention to the DO NOT WALK SIGNS!
If a card says do not walk, always ask management
before assuming the dog is walkable. This can change daily
depending on the dog's progress or health; therefore,

it is very important to always ask first.

FOSTER HELP NEEDED!!!
From Susan:
We are looking for volunteers to foster cats that need medical attention.  Medicine is usually administered from between 10-14 days.  This is not a very difficult thing to do.  You need a separate room to keep the cat away from your pets.
******************************************************
KITTEN FOSTERS NEEDED

If interested in helping out, please contact the shelter at socaf@ochd.org.
From Susan:

To all volunteers who wish to socialize with the cats when I am not there, PLEASE take only one cat out at a time.  Cats that should not be taken out have an X with a circle around the X.  These cats need time to adjust to the shelter.
Thank You, Susan
