It has come to my attention that some new volunteers were at the shelter today without being on the schedule. Please remember to send me an e-mail with your schedule, or at least call me at 709-4140.
Volunteers who show up without being on the schedule might not be allowed to stay.
Thank you.

Update Olive, from Connie:
Olive is loving her new sweater!!..She is doing good despite a bad foot infection and enjoying being pampered!
***********************************************************
A true December morning out there today, but nothing a brisk walk with warm woofs can't fix, and in a hurry!! I see that Millie, a pretty pittie mix, black and white, is back due to no fault of her own. That's a pleasant lady, that dog. She had a terrific looong walk with Angie, who, as much as you might think, may not be the best walking friend, but she was! Millie has some pep in her step and was the one who wanted to prance with Angie.
Angie just needs long walks, some training, etc, because the longer she's out walking, the better she becomes, which is to be expected from a young pittypup.
Have no doubt that Millie (Princess Millicent!) will get another chance to be home, just a sweet gal.
So we sweatered up the pups, Sadie and Darla (Sadie 's all red, with white footies; Darla's tan and white), and got them out. They had a little meet and greet time, too, to work out some rambunctiousness, if that's possible!!
Next to the sign in sheet, the walkable dogs are listed, as well as in the entrance to A side, but here's the needed addition to that list. The walkable dogs names will also have the color grade(red, yellow, green) ratings for all to see and, again, please walk within your limits. There are some sweet dogs, but are coded red because they aren't dog friendly,or are a bit stronger than they may appear, or squirrely to harness up, etc, which can be a problem if you are not aware. Avoid a problem, remember "what could go wrong here?", and with that thought in mind, you'll have an enjoyable walk day.
Poor Adam; he's a bit bruised from the surgery; go easy with him. I'm not sure if he read his own chart and will go easy with you, but he's a good, handsome, strong young boy. He seems to be okay, but keep an eye on him for any stitch/bleeding problems.
Hey! There was that really gorgeous black with a little white female pit in the other day and got reclaimed. NO KIDDING she belonged to somebody!! She had her nails painted!! And not just like red or pink!!! Oh NOOO!!! They had like a gold design on them too, so , ahhh, yeah, apparently NOT a stray, unless she was breaking into the nail salons at night and doing her own nails!!! Can you see that BIG dog sitting nice and still while her owner does her nails?? Hahaha! Some days, ya just gotta laugh around here. Dave .
Joan's Notes:
TIME WITH ADAM:
I spent a good hour working with Adam today. He is young, rambunctious, loves belly and tushy rubs, but is difficult to keep focused. I did discover he likes to chew on leashes, and to carry a stick, so it would be best to use a chain leash and perhaps bring a toy for him to carry in his mouth. I may try using a head harness next time for a bit more control. He does know SIT, and responds pretty well to that command. He is very food motivated.
Self control is a real challenge for Adam, must work hard on that.
He is also a jumping bean, another reason I want to try the head harness. Walking can be difficult as he jumps most of the time...stepping on the leash did get his attention and kept him from jumping up on me.
Adam is a sweet boy that just needs some consistent training, he is quite affectionate and so cute.

Dog Walking Schedule:
The minimum number of walkers needed by 9:00 a.m. is two in order to handle the task of getting dogs out for their first morning walk.
Volunteers are really needed early in the morning, 9:00 a.m. every day! Even if you can only help for a half hour or an hour, it would help.
The dogs are color coded. New volunteers may NOT walk Red dogs. Please pay attention to the color coding and the cage cards. Red walkers' names in red type.
***************************
Important: Please do not sign up for a shift if you aren't sure you can make it! Other volunteers come in if there isn't enough coverage. Some people have signed up for shifts and have been either late or not shown up at all. We really need at least two people early in the morning--9:00--to get everyone out.
*Please make sure you notify me of your walking plans by Sunday night each week!
If you don't know your availability a week in advance and see we need help the next day, just send me an e-mail by 10 p.m. the night before, and I will put you on the schedule and notify the shelter.
Maximum number of walkers in the morning is 6 at one time, 4 in the afternoon.
Please make sure no dogs are left outside or in the meet-and-greet room when the last volunteer leaves.

To All Dog Walkers:
Please pay attention to the DO NOT WALK SIGNS!
If a card says do not walk, always ask management
before assuming the dog is walkable. This can change daily
depending on the dog's progress or health; therefore,
it is very important to always ask first.

FOSTER HELP NEEDED!!!
From Susan:
We are looking for volunteers to foster cats that need medical attention. Medicine is usually administered from between 10-14 days. This is not a very difficult thing to do. You need a separate room to keep the cat away from your pets.
******************************************************
KITTEN FOSTERS NEEDED
If interested in helping out, please contact the shelter at socaf@ochd.org.
From Susan:
To all volunteers who wish to socialize with the cats when I am not there, PLEASE take only one cat out at a time. Cats that should not be taken out have an X with a circle around the X. These cats need time to adjust to the shelter.
Thank You, Susan
