Duke hired someone!  He was adopted today!!!!!

Charly was rescued by the Friends!

**********************************
From Dave:

Somewhat Sultry, Simmering SUN-days Newz

What a patch on the soul is a good morning spent with a dog like Duke.  I needed that. When I peeked in on the B side to see him, it was quite a different greeting than our last visit together a couple of long weeks ago. Duke popped up and as if to say, "Hey!!! We GOING, huh?" and yeah, we did.  Since Linda and Kathy were off with the 2 little ones( A Porkie!!  yorkie-pug!!!  cute dog) and the Chihua-what? (chihuahua and whatever), Duke and I traveled with a decent little breeze, as it seems we always get, and grass under our feet. He certainly has come a long way from that frightened, timid chap we first knew. DOOK, I'm proud of you. He enjoys the outside run too, but I didn't want to fill his pool. He still has stitches from a hernia surgery.

Spent a little time too with Rhodie. She's a funny mischievous pup that doesn't know she's a good sized gal. Nice dog. Linda and Kathy soaped up the elder  Lucky, and he took that bath like a champ. The sand and dirt washed away, and he's gotta be a lot more comfortable now.

Thanks to all for carrying the load lately, and I'll thank you, too, for the kind words and concern. And especially the wonderful basket of fruit from the FOSOCAF and volunteers as a group. Very much appreciated.  Thanks is too simple a word to say it all, but ...thanks.

And, the whole Comet story, if that don't get ya right in the old breadbasket, wow, good for you, you good old Goldie!! That was terrific!

Hey, there was a day last week when I checked the newz, and there were no dogs on the A side!!!  That's a joke we always tossed around, ... what a day it would be when all good dogs were home? At least we had one bright, shining moment when we could put up a notice on the front door,  "CLOSED! NO DOGS AVAILABLE, GO AWAY!!!! EVERYBODY WENT HOME!"      That was moment to always remember, and it'll happen again because of you guys and some kinda nice animals.

Now,....if we can get the Lion Tamers to empty out that Cat room, well, that's the next goal to accomplish. How cool would that be??? That would be cataclysmic! Get it?  CAT-aclysmic, okay, whatever!!!    Dave

Update on Casper, now Coda:  Doing great and is very loved!!!!

Update on Angel (red pit pup), now Kona: She is not going anywhere. Total love!!!!

Please remember to empty the pools before you leave, if you are one of the last volunteers at the shelter!

From Connie:

Hi Dog Walkers, If you will, please get the days and times you will be able to walk dogs in the upcoming week to Joanne Eckert no later than Sunday night each week.  I need to turn in the schedule to the HD on Monday mornings.  Thanks so much for volunteering your time for the animals! It is greatly appreciated!!

From Dottie:

NEW PROCEDURES

To help the staff accomplish the important things they need to do during the day, the following changes are being made to the volunteer scheduling and program.
As of today, Friday, June 1, our new volunteering hours are as follows:

In the morning the hours for DOG WALKERS are 9-12; staff members will be walking the housebroken dogs at 8:00 a.m.
By 12 o'clock all dogs must be brought in and put in the inside runs so no one is entering or leaving the building during lunch hour.
At 1:00 dogs can be taken back out for walks and to the runs for afternoon fun.
Between the hours of 12:00 and 1:00 no volunteers in the building please.
We ask that as best you can, every Saturday or Sunday you let Joanne Eckert know who will be walking that week and what times. We will be turning a schedule into the supervisors for the week, which will be posted. The number of dogwalkers at any given time is 6 in the morning and 4 in the afternoon. Exceptions include events, meetings and taking pictures.

Please make sure you wear your badge and/or a volunteer t-shirt and . . . please wear the all important proper footwear and attire.
The new mirrors are being installed in the hallways to aid in unexpected meetings of dogs. These will help in seeing who is coming and going.
We hope that everyone will comply with the new adjustments as it helps all of us to help the animals.

Thank you,
Dottie Reynolds

From Erma:  Everyone can pick up their ID cards and t-shirts at the shelter.  Leave a note if I'm not there, and we'll get them to you.  T-shirts are $10.00 each donation;  ID cards are free.

***************************************************

All new walkers may walk green dogs on their own once they have gone through orientation. New walkers may walk yellow dogs once they have been with a red walker and told by the red walker they are okay to move on.

***********EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY***********

All volunteers must wear either their ID badge or a volunteer T-shirt.

************************************************
It's mosquito season!  Please be sure to empty the kiddie pools and bring in any blankets or towels left outside before you leave in the afternoon.
***********************************************

Green walkers please look for volunteers with the red dot on their badge.  They will help you with anything you need.

From Connie:

It has been asked of us volunteers to not come to the shelter during Rabies clinic. Rabies Clinic is the 2nd and 4th Friday of the month from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m.  Walkers are welcome before and after the clinic hours.

****************************************************************

From SOCAF Management:

All dogs need to be walked with two leashes at all times, whether they are being walked from the pen to their runs, or just a few feet.  No excuses, please!

The dogs must be on county property at all times when being walked.  They cannot be walked IN the street or across the street.

Smoking is not allowed while walking dogs.

**********************************************************

TO ALL VOLUNTEERS:

If you see a dog limping, notice a lump, blood in the stool, etc., anything out of the ordinary, or if there is an incident with the dog, be sure to notify the supervisors, document the incident, and put it into the dog's file, keeping a copy for yourself.

********************************************************

Dog Walking Schedule:

Please check the dog-walking schedule below.
There are many days and time slots with little or no coverage.
Please e-mail me with the days and times you are able to cover.
If no one can cover, the dogs will either not get out in the morning or have to go back inside early on those days.

The minimum number of walkers needed by 9:00 a.m. is two in order to handle the task of getting dogs out for their first morning walk.

Volunteers are really needed early in the morning, 9:00 a.m. every day!  Even if  you can only help for a half hour or an hour, it would help.
The dogs are color coded.  New volunteers may NOT walk Red dogs.  Please pay attention to the color coding and the cage cards.  Red walkers' names in red type.
***************************
Important:  Please do not sign up for a shift if you aren't sure you can make it!  Other volunteers come in if there isn't enough coverage.  Some people have signed up for shifts and have been either late or not shown up at all.  We really need at least two people early in the morning--9:00--to get everyone out.

*When you notify me of the times you are planning to walk dogs, please give me both a start and an end time. Maximum number of walkers in the morning is 6 at one time, 4 in the afternoon.*

FOSTER HELP NEEDED!!!
From Susan:
We are looking for volunteers to foster cats that need medical attention.  Medicine is usually administered from between 10-14 days.  This is not a very difficult thing to do.  You need a separate room to keep the cat away from your pets.

**********************************************************

KITTEN FOSTERS NEEDED

If interested in helping out, please contact the shelter at socaf@ochd.org.

From Susan:

To all volunteers who wish to socialize with the cats when I am not there, PLEASE take only one cat out at a time.  Cats that should not be taken out have an X with a circle around the X.  These cats need time to adjust to the shelter.
Thank You, Susan
