From Erma, Samantha's going-home pic:

Also from Erma, Princess Going Home:

Update Mimi, now Morgan:
Morgan is doing great, thinks she's a lap dog.
They go to puppy training at Petco, she know how to sit, lay down and roll over.
They keep a straight eye on her so she stays out of trouble, does well in her crate rot
the hour or two that they are gone.  She has a great personality loves to play but
plays too hard and doesn't know when to quit, they are working on that.
She LOVES people!

Updates from Facebook:

Shelby is relaxing and enjoying life at her foster home while she waits for her forever family.

Tink at Pack Ethic getting ready for their adoption event this weekend.
*********************************
Dave's niece had taken in a little Puggle with serious health problems a year ago.  She loved that little dog up until the end, which came last week. Thank goodness for people like Dave's niece and many of you who take in the sick, the scared, the lost, and the dying and give them love up until their last breath.  It is an honor to know you.

From Dottie:

The following letter is such a moving endorsement of the joys of adopting a shelter pet.

Hi!  I’ve been meaning to send this note that my disabled son Buddy posted on Facebook more than a year ago.  He passed away in April and we requested that donations be made to the Friends in his name and in honor of his shelter cat, “Humphrey”. Please read and pass along to the other friends, including Sue and Ann who were instrumental in helping me find our new furry friend!
Sincerely,
Kathleen Hedden

New addition to our family, please read about our new adopted pet from the Animal Shelter
by Budd Hedden on Thursday, May 19, 2011 at 11:36am

My mother and I just adopted a young cat from the Southern Ocean County Animal Shelter. He is the nicest cat ever, he loves to play like a kitten then he gets all tuckered out and naps like he hasn't slept in a week! He's so much fun and since my mothers cat of 13 years became very ill and recently passed and my dog who meant the world to me just passed after being my best friend for the past 14 years he is a welcomed addition to our family. I don't know who is happier the kitten or my mother and I, he's just such a lovable cat. No one will ever replace my dog Nico or my mothers cat Cheeky but "Homer, Lil Homey, or sometimes we call him Homeslice" is making life much happier since we lost our beloved pets!

P.S. There are many many beautiful cats and dogs just waiting for a home, please do not buy from pet stores or private dealers! These shelters have just about anything that you’re looking for and you are giving them a second lease on life, usually from a seriously neglected previous past life! These animals are just looking to be loved and from what I’ve learned, make the best pets that I have ever seen, so please rescue your next pet and I guarantee you'll be happy you did.

************************************************
It's mosquito season!  Please be sure to empty the kiddie pools and bring in any blankets or towels left outside before you leave in the afternoon.

Green walkers, please look for volunteers with the red dot on their badge.  They will help you with anything you need.

****************************************************************

From SOCAF Management:

All dogs need to be walked with two leashes at all times, whether they are being walked from the pen to their runs, or just a few feet.  No excuses, please!

The dogs must be on county property at all times when being walked.  They cannot be walked IN the street or across the street.

Smoking is not allowed while walking dogs.

**********************************************************

TO ALL VOLUNTEERS:

If you see a dog limping, notice a lump, blood in the stool, etc., anything out of the ordinary, or if there is an incident with the dog, be sure to notify the supervisors, document the incident, and put it into the dog's file, keeping a copy for yourself.

********************************************************

Dog Walking Schedule:

Please check the dog-walking schedule below.
There are many days and time slots with little or no coverage.
Please e-mail me with the days and times you are able to cover.
If no one can cover, the dogs will either not get out in the morning or have to go back inside early on those days.

The minimum number of walkers needed by 9:00 a.m. is two in order to handle the task of getting dogs out for their first morning walk.

Volunteers are really needed early in the morning, 9:00 a.m. every day!  Even if   you can only help for a half hour or an hour, it would help.
The dogs are color coded.  New volunteers may NOT walk Red dogs.  Please pay attention to the color coding and the cage cards.  Red walkers' names in red type.
***************************
Important:  Please do not sign up for a shift if you aren't sure you can make it!  Other volunteers come in if there isn't enough coverage.  Some people have signed up for shifts and have been either late or not shown up at all.  We really need at least two people early in the morning--9:00--to get everyone out.

*Please make sure you notify me of your walking plans by Sunday night each week!
Maximum number of walkers in the morning is 6 at one time, 4 in the afternoon.*

FOSTER HELP NEEDED!!!
From Susan:
We are looking for volunteers to foster cats that need medical attention.  Medicine is usually administered from between 10-14 days.  This is not a very difficult thing to do.  You need a separate room to keep the cat away from your pets.

**********************************************************

KITTEN FOSTERS NEEDED

If interested in helping out, please contact the shelter at socaf@ochd.org.

From Susan:

To all volunteers who wish to socialize with the cats when I am not there, PLEASE take only one cat out at a time.  Cats that should not be taken out have an X with a circle around the X.  These cats need time to adjust to the shelter.
Thank You, Susan
