From Dave:
Not a bad day at all. We had a breeze as we always do, so walking was fine. The lovely Pocahontas and the beautiful, hyena -like Bruno had a couple of nice strolls. Bruno is still a little insecure, but alongside the confident Poco, he is just dandy. He has the coolest face and markings, just neat! I can't stop looking at him; he's just so attractive a dog. Just remember who you got on the leash, with 2 chocolate Labs (Nestle and Sunny), and 2 black Labs, (Lucky and Nina). Be aware which is which. Plus, Lacey on the B side is another black Lab to consider.
The little Rotti pup is up to, ohhhh, 350 pounds now. (Well, it feels like that, the little cannonball!!) He is the best behaved pup I think we've seen, a little gentleman!! (No name yet, .....Tonka? Bruce? Mt. Mckinley?? Peterbilt??) [Carmine -ed.]
There are a few new guys on B, not yet fully vaccinated. Had the chance to take out the shy, black and tan brindle pit mix. She's not named yet, a shy gal, but once out on the leash, a nice walker, good dog. Reminds me of a smaller " Diesel", who was a gentleman, a real goodie from awhile ago, She'll be fine, takes a handling well, and, is pretty girl too. Any suggestions for names ?
Linda says that tan min-pin is a swell dog too, and he is!! Not frightened or insecure, a neat, well mannered fella.
Nina had a right eye discharge, was checked out and got some drops, so just be aware and let staff know if you think it's still an issue. And if you clean her right eye with a damp paper towel, just be sure not to touch her left eye and wash up so it doesn't spread to another dog, as well. She doesn't go especially far on a walk, so unless you've got a wheelbarrow stashed in the woods somewhere, turn around before we gotta send out the forklift for the two of you!! Nina's a sweetheart and a gentle soul,.
She spent some morning time in the staff area under the guise of getting medical attention. She was getting attention, all right, and it was probably medicinal in a lotta ways, so, ya know, whatever!!! Dave
Poco & Bruno. Walk very nicely together. Bruno still not quite so sure how to play, but Poco is good role model.

Love our dogs? Then adopt one as a Shelter Pup and FRIENDS will get a portion of the sale! Shelter Pups has turned a select group of dogs from our shelter into amazing and realistic plush pups. Check out Casper and wonderful Sherman! It's a great way to “adopt” one of our dogs and help our volunteer FRIENDS group at the same time. Shelter Pups can also make customs of your very own dog. From SOCAF Management:
All dogs need to be walked with two leashes at all times, whether they are being walked from the pen to their runs, or just a few feet. No excuses, please!
The dogs must be on county property at all times when being walked. They cannot be walked IN the street or across the street.
Smoking is not allowed while walking dogs.
**********************************************************
TO ALL VOLUNTEERS:
If you see a dog limping, notice a lump, blood in the stool, etc., anything out of the ordinary, or if there is an incident with the dog, be sure to notify the supervisors, document the incident, and put it into the dog's file, keeping a copy for yourself.
********************************************************
Dog Walking Schedule:
Please check the dog-walking schedule below.
There are many days and time slots with little or no coverage.
Please e-mail me with the days and times you are able to cover.
If no one can cover, the dogs will either not get out in the morning or have to go back inside early on those days.
The minimum number of walkers needed by 9:00 a.m. is two in order to handle the task of getting dogs out for their first morning walk.
Volunteers are really needed early in the morning, 9:00 a.m. every day! Even if you can only help for a half hour or an hour, it would help.
The dogs are color coded. New volunteers may NOT walk Red dogs. Please pay attention to the color coding and the cage cards. Red walkers' names in red type.
***************************
Important: Please do not sign up for a shift if you aren't sure you can make it! Other volunteers come in if there isn't enough coverage. Some people have signed up for shifts and have been either late or not shown up at all. We really need at least two people early in the morning--9:00--to get everyone out.
*When you notify me of the times you are planning to walk dogs, please give me both a start and an end time. Maximum number of walkers in the morning is 6 at one time, 4 in the afternoon.*

FOSTER HELP NEEDED!!!
From Susan:
We are looking for volunteers to foster cats that need medical attention. Medicine is usually administered from between 10-14 days. This is not a very difficult thing to do. You need a separate room to keep the cat away from your pets.
**********************************************************
KITTEN FOSTERS NEEDED
If interested in helping out, please contact the shelter at socaf@ochd.org.
From Susan:
To all volunteers who wish to socialize with the cats when I am not there, PLEASE take only one cat out at a time. Cats that should not be taken out have an X with a circle around the X. These cats need time to adjust to the shelter.
Thank You, Susan
SOCAF's Gallery of Glorious Cats
Special Thanks to Amy and Jennifer for taking these pics and for keeping us updated as to which cats are where.
