Please be very careful with the dogs in this heat!
If you're uncomfortable, so are they.

High heat and humidity can lead to heat exhaustion very quickly, so please don't leave the dogs outside.  Short walks are best, plenty of water, then back inside to cool off.

From Pat, JT and his buddy, Elvis (formerly Cadbury).

Update Junior, Princess, and Rang:

Princess gained almost 10 pounds, ears and skin much better, she's getting her second round of worming and then going to spay her the end of the week, fingers crossed it goes ok. She stopped the crazy excessive drinking/peeing gallons and is housebroken now so that's good (the first few days she FLOODED the kitchen with pee, lol). Her white count dropped in half so that's a good sign was from infection and not cancer hopefully, still possibility of pyo so vet does want to spay her. Junior gained over 10 lbs., skin much better and hair starting to grow in a little even. Rang aka Jeeves looking great too, he doesn't have that crusty elephant skin underneath anymore and he's done with his ear meds. All 3 are very lively for their age, no one can believe how old they are! Princess loves tennis balls and she wrestles with Katie a young lab mix we have, it's so funny. Jeeves likes to herd the little dogs sometimes like a true sheltie, and Junior's the happiest friendliest dog ever and just always looks like he's smiling.
No interest in adopting them, or anyone really right now, it's been horribly slow and we have had very few "adoptable" people at all, hopefully things will pick up soon...

A Note from Dottie:

Hi All,

Every week single kittens and litters of kittens are found on LBI and the mainland under sheds, under bushes in the sand dunes, behind garages.  The Friends of Southern Ocean County Animal Shelter can only rescue them if we have a place to care for them until they weigh 2 pounds (about 8 weeks) when they can be spayed/neutered and then be placed for adoption.  A crate to hold them can be supplied. The Friends pay for veterinary visits.  Please send me an email inviting a litter of kittens into your home.  You will make it possible for a kitten to say, "I'm alive because I had a foster home; someone made a small sacrifice and welcomed me for a short visit into their life."

Some kittens are waiting for your email, please.

Dog Walking Schedule:

The minimum number of walkers needed by 9:00 a.m. is two in order to handle the task of getting dogs out for their first morning walk.

Volunteers are really needed early in the morning, 9:00 a.m. every day!  Even if   you can only help for a half hour or an hour, it would help.
The dogs are color coded.  New volunteers may NOT walk Red dogs.  Please pay attention to the color coding and the cage cards.  Red walkers' names in red type.
***************************
Important:  Please do not sign up for a shift if you aren't sure you can make it!  Other volunteers come in if there isn't enough coverage.  Some people have signed up for shifts and have been either late or not shown up at all.  We really need at least two people early in the morning--9:00--to get everyone out.

*Please try to notify me of your walking plans by Sunday night each week.
If you don't know your availability a week in advance and see we need help the next day, just send me an e-mail by 10 p.m. the night before, and I will put you on the schedule and notify the shelter.

Maximum number of walkers in the morning is 6 at one time, 4 in the afternoon.
Please make sure no dogs are left outside or in the meet-and-greet room when the last volunteer leaves.

REMINDER:  Every Tuesday is surgery day.  Find out who is having surgery when you come to walk the dogs.

**KITTEN FOSTERS NEEDED ASAP**

We are in need of fosters for our Bottle Baby kittens!

It's that time of the year again.  We need willing fosters who
can handle a litter of bottle babies, which require round-the-clock feeding. Yes, this means night time as well! We supply all the necessities, including a cage. Compensation will be given for your loving time and devotion.

We also need regular kitten fosters, as well, for a maximum of three kittens. Please contact Susan at pink49puffer@inbox.com if you would like to help us during this time! Thank you so much!

KITTEN FOSTERS NEEDED

If interested in helping out, please contact the shelter at socaf@ochd.org.
From Susan:

To all volunteers who wish to socialize with the cats when I am not there, PLEASE take only one cat out at a time.  Cats that should not be taken out have an X with a circle around the X.  These cats need time to adjust to the shelter.
Thank You, Susan

Hi Dog Walkers, If you will, please get the days and times you will be able to walk dogs in the upcoming week to Joanne Eckert no later than Sunday night each week.  I need to turn in the schedule to the HD on Monday mornings.  Thanks so much for volunteering your time for the animals! It is greatly appreciated!!

Love our dogs? Then adopt one as a Shelter Pup and FRIENDS will get a portion of the sale! Shelter Pups has turned a select group of dogs from our shelter into amazing and realistic plush pups. Check out Casper and wonderful Sherman! It's a great way to “adopt” one of our dogs and help our volunteer FRIENDS group at the same time. Shelter Pups can also make customs of your very own dog. Check it out and bring one of our dogs home as a Shelter Pup!
