Updating the SIGN-IN POLICY CHANGE
To our great volunteers: Policy states that all Dog Walkers must email Joanne Eckert (the designated person) to be put on the "Dog Walker" Volunteer Schedule for the day and time when you will be at the Shelter. (We are no longer calling the Shelter, Joanne Eckert or Connie Lohr.) Our Volunteer Contract located next to the sign-in sheet is highlighted where this provision is stated. Everyone working with the dogs, whether walking, socializing, or grooming, is included in the "Dog Walker" Schedule. In other words, if you will be working with the dogs, please let Joanne know by 10:30 p.m. or so if you are able to volunteer the following day and have not previously e-mailed her. She will make sure you are on the schedule.
Cat Room Volunteers will please let Susan Lounsbury know when they are volunteering and Susan will update the "Cat Room" Volunteer Schedule.
So as not to limit the number of Dog Walkers or Cat Room volunteers, the Health Department is including a category for other purposes: "Special Projects" Committee Volunteers. The Special Projects Committee includes those who more briefly stop in the Shelter for other specific purposes, such as photographers, picking up dogs for rescue, signing out our Friends Rescue dogs, picking up cats for PetSmart or Friends Cat Rescue, dropping off or picking up items for/from the shelter, discussions with shelter staff, volunteer paperwork, Petfinders, Food Pantry or working in the shed. Special Projects Committee Volunteers can call the Shelter to let the staff know they are coming or just sign in and indicate the Special Project on the Sign-Sheet when they arrive at the Shelter. This will allow our program to run more smoothly and the Health Department can know who is volunteering at a given time and in what area they are volunteering.
Our Volunteer Contracts are being updated for 2013. Please fill out and sign your contract and return it to the Shelter by March 15th.
The Health Department has stated that they are very pleased with our wonderful Volunteer Program and the great job everyone is doing with the dogs and cats, especially the increase in adoptions! Thank you for loving our Shelter Pets and for keeping the program running smoothly.
NEW -- Volunteer messages will now be posted on "The Scoop" which is edited by Claire Edelstein. Our Shelter News, where Joanne Eckert so successfully keeps us updated with photos and all the happy news she and Dave Appelt send us from the Shelter, can now be more devoted to stories and photographs of our shelter pets, adoptions, news from adopted pet owners, and upcoming events. If you do not receive The Scoop (cleverly named by Barry) send Claire your email address at wheel459@aol.com to be added to the mailing list. If you know someone who wishes to receive The Shelter News, send their email address to Joanne at jeckert30@gmail.com. Keep the good news coming!

The Friends would like to thank Pet Value of Forked River (Lanoka Harbor) for their generous donation of cat litter.
It will be a great help to all of our fosters and kitties in need.
Please come to Pet Value to see some of our fabulous cats that are up for adoption every weekend from 10 to 2.
Come celebrate with us on Pet Appreciation weekend April 13 and 14!

Pack Ethic needs all the help they can get financially, so Muervet found an internet company that sells t-shirts and donates $5 for each shirt you order to a rescue organization and set it up to benefit Pack Ethic. I’m Not A Monster is a dog advocacy initiative that aims to improve bully breeds’ image through positive portrayals.
If you need a t-shirt or two to complete your spring/summer wardrobe, this would be a good place to start shopping and help Pack Ethic at the same time!

Dog Walking Schedule:
The minimum number of walkers needed by 9:00 a.m. is two in order to handle the task of getting dogs out for their first morning walk.
Volunteers are really needed early in the morning, 9:00 a.m. every day! Even if you can only help for a half hour or an hour, it would help.
The dogs are color coded. New volunteers may NOT walk Red dogs. Please pay attention to the color coding and the cage cards. Red walkers' names in red type.
***************************
Important: Please do not sign up for a shift if you aren't sure you can make it! Other volunteers come in if there isn't enough coverage. Some people have signed up for shifts and have been either late or not shown up at all. We really need at least two people early in the morning--9:00--to get everyone out.
*Please make sure you notify me of your walking plans by Sunday night each week!
If you don't know your availability a week in advance and see we need help the next day, just send me an e-mail by 10 p.m. the night before, and I will put you on the schedule and notify the shelter.
Maximum number of walkers in the morning is 6 at one time, 4 in the afternoon.
Please make sure no dogs are left outside or in the meet-and-greet room when the last volunteer leaves.

Rabies Clinic is the 2nd. and 4th. Wednesday of the month. Dogs must be back inside by 10:30 on Clinic days.
To All Dog Walkers:
Please pay attention to the DO NOT WALK SIGNS! If a card says do not walk, always ask management before assuming the dog is walkable. This can change daily depending on the dog's progress or health; therefore, it is very important to always ask first.

FOSTER HELP NEEDED!!!
From Susan:
We are looking for volunteers to foster cats that need medical attention. Medicine is usually administered from between 10-14 days. This is not a very difficult thing to do. You need a separate room to keep the cat away from your pets.
******************************************************
KITTEN FOSTERS NEEDED
If interested in helping out, please contact the shelter at socaf@ochd.org.
From Susan:
To all volunteers who wish to socialize with the cats when I am not there, PLEASE take only one cat out at a time. Cats that should not be taken out have an X with a circle around the X. These cats need time to adjust to the shelter.
Thank You, Susan

Hi Dog Walkers, If you will, please get the days and times you will be able to walk dogs in the upcoming week to Joanne Eckert no later than Sunday night each week. I need to turn in the schedule to the HD on Monday mornings. Thanks so much for volunteering your time for the animals! It is greatly appreciated!!
**********************************************************
Love our dogs? Then adopt one as a Shelter Pup and FRIENDS will get a portion of the sale! Shelter Pups has turned a select group of dogs from our shelter into amazing and realistic plush pups. Check out Casper and wonderful Sherman! It's a great way to “adopt” one of our dogs and help our volunteer FRIENDS group at the same time. Shelter Pups can also make customs of your very own dog. Check it out and bring one of our dogs home as a Shelter Pup!
************************************
Anyone who needs a T-shirt, please e-mail Debbie at nyrfan12@aol.com. Send her the size you need, and she'll leave it in the locker room with your name attached.
***************************************************
All new walkers may walk green dogs on their own once they have gone through orientation. New walkers may walk yellow dogs once they have been with a red walker and told by the red walker they are okay to move on.
***********EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY***********
All volunteers must wear either their ID badge or a volunteer T-shirt.
************************************************
****************************************************************
From SOCAF Management:
All dogs need to be walked with two leashes at all times, whether they are being walked from the pen to their runs, or just a few feet. No excuses, please!
The dogs must be on county property at all times when being walked. They cannot be walked IN the street or across the street.
Smoking is not allowed while walking dogs.
When walking dogs, please do not allow dogs to jump up onto any vehicles.
**********************************************************
TO ALL VOLUNTEERS:
If you see a dog limping, notice a lump, blood in the stool, etc., anything out of the ordinary, or if there is an incident with the dog, be sure to notify the supervisors, document the incident, and put it into the dog's file, keeping a copy for yourself.
