Tuesday's Notes from Dave:

Nice turnout from the 'crew who do', so tails were a wagging, and by noon, volunteers were a draggin'!!

Nice strolls through the woods, the trails were not too squishy as I had imagined. So, with the arrival of Janice, Paula (who have really gotten very good at handling the dogs), Ken, Catherine, and Tom, I able to get some on-the-job training in with April. As we all remember, it's nice to harness, collar, and walk, when you are new at it, with the cushion of having another volunteer helping you with the ins and outs, the nuts and bolts of it all. So, with a good crew out and about, hitting the road, we took Flora,  then, ,  moved up to Cleo. And it went well, and Cleo, who pulls a bit, at least is consistent. I prefer her steady pull like a tractor to stop and go pullybullys. Had some run time too with the likable Cara.

Today's lineup:  2- Benjamin or McGee, depending on who was on the road, 3-Flora 4- Cara , 8-Codey.

Otis, that big boy yellow Lab, and Cali, as well as the walkable B siders, all got a good amount of gravel travel. Flora, I believe , will have surgery tomorrow with today being the Lincoln's Birthday holiday.

Hasn't Benji seemed to have 'gotten it' a little bit more in the past week? I said to Catherine, "Be careful; he can be a handful."  No!! Not Benjamin, I meant her hubby Tom !! hahaha. He was getting some good OJT as well, walking with Catherine today.  He actually was pretty easy going today, even just standing around between walks. (Benji, that is!! Well, Tom too!! But anyhoo). He is the definition of a character, ain't he the Benjabumble??? Needs more good work, but little by little, that smart lug is coming along.

If you are a little new at this volunteering, check the schedule, and try to get in with some of the senior vol types, and get your confidence and expertise level tuned up a bit. It'll become more and more enjoyable for you and the dogs we walk.

Today the time flew, and that's great, because others were around working and walking. By the time I looked up, it was 11:30, and it was, "McGee? Lets moooove!" for the final walk of a pretty good day. As we were heading back, I said to McGee, you are one of the handsomest dogs that I have ever seen, here, out there, anywhere!! Gosh, what a stunning dog. You know, he is up there with Blizzard, Apache, Liberty, Jameson, Kirby, Daisy, Duke, Lola, and I'm sure you all can name a few other beauts, as well. Wow, what a good way to wrap up a good morning!!    Dave

From Cathy:

From Connie:

This week!  Bakers needed!

********************************************************

Dog Walking Schedule:

The minimum number of walkers needed by 9:00 a.m. is two in order to handle the task of getting dogs out for their first morning walk.

Volunteers are really needed early in the morning, 9:00 a.m. every day!  Even if   you can only help for a half hour or an hour, it would help.
The dogs are color coded.  New volunteers may NOT walk Red dogs.  Please pay attention to the color coding and the cage cards.  Red walkers' names in red type.
***************************
Important:  Please do not sign up for a shift if you aren't sure you can make it!  Other volunteers come in if there isn't enough coverage.  Some people have signed up for shifts and have been either late or not shown up at all.  We really need at least two people early in the morning--9:00--to get everyone out.

*Please make sure you notify me of your walking plans by Sunday night each week!
If you don't know your availability a week in advance and see we need help the next day, just send me an e-mail by 10 p.m. the night before, and I will put you on the schedule and notify the shelter.

Maximum number of walkers in the morning is 6 at one time, 4 in the afternoon.
Please make sure no dogs are left outside or in the meet-and-greet room when the last volunteer leaves.

REMINDER:  Every Tuesday is surgery day.  Find out who is having surgery when you come to walk the dogs.

Rabies Clinic is the 2nd. and 4th. Wednesday of the month. Dogs must be back inside by 10:30 on Clinic days.

To All Dog Walkers:
Please pay attention to the DO NOT WALK SIGNS! If a card says do not walk, always ask management before assuming the dog is walkable. This can change daily depending on the dog's progress or health; therefore, it is very important to always ask first.

***From Cathy:  After walking the dogs on the salt covered roads and parking lot, we should wipe their paws with a towel to keep them from ingesting it and getting sick***

FOSTER HELP NEEDED!!!
From Susan:
We are looking for volunteers to foster cats that need medical attention.  Medicine is usually administered from between 10-14 days.  This is not a very difficult thing to do.  You need a separate room to keep the cat away from your pets.
******************************************************
KITTEN FOSTERS NEEDED

If interested in helping out, please contact the shelter at socaf@ochd.org.
From Susan:

To all volunteers who wish to socialize with the cats when I am not there, PLEASE take only one cat out at a time.  Cats that should not be taken out have an X with a circle around the X.  These cats need time to adjust to the shelter.
Thank You, Susan
