Help Still Needed on Friday morning!
E-mail me if you can help.
*******************************
From Joanna:

Wolfie, 8-year-old Shiba Inu
No cats, no dogs, no kids under 15

Mirage, 4-year-old Husky
No kids under 15

Joan Jotz worked with Angie today to help her with the impulse control and Leave It.  Angie waits and leaves the toy until she is given the command to Take It.  She is very puppy-mouthy, but learned that nipping is not rewarded.  Joan worked with food and food in the bowl and taught Angie to Leave It.  Angie knows the Sit and Touch commands.

After her hard work, she had play time with Joan and a toy.

Thank you, Joan!

Thursday's Newz, from Dave:

This morning was a perfect day all the way around for walking some delightful dogs--47 degrees, clear, sunny--it was one of those mornings we were dreaming of back when it was 90 degrees plus!! Remember saying,  "Oh, I cannot wait till its CHILLY!!! Let me get a fleece and a hoodie and get a move on!!" And so it went.

The sweater box/bin is located below the harness rack, they went through the wash cycle today, courtesy of Mike, staff. Bow-Wow was all toasted up when he got sweatered, he was  BOW-WOW_ WWWOOOWW!  Utilized the lovely Pippa today for the tour, and also today, had a little stroll with the well mannered, civilized little tan, soft as suede, Butch. For a puppy, he is a delightful, behaved young dog. And with that, Angie is wondering, "OHHHH?? And what am I?? chopped  Alpo?  No, but  Angie has the Pit Pup manual memorized front to back. She is a little imp, which is part of what makes those young goofy pittypups so, cute, so puppalicious!!! Joan will be working with her today.  Angie's got terrific marking/coloring, a nice gal, (just pay attention to Butchie, and you too, will be sayonara soon, out the door, home too!!)

Joanne got some greeeat photos of  the American Bull Terrier (can we come up with a name? Any suggestions?  OOGIE comes to mind for me.)  And how do I know the pictures of her are good? Well, they are PHOTOS of  HER!!!  She poses like a supermodel.  She is a bit better on the walk and all, but don't get too far away, or you are in for the carrying section of dog walking, page 734 of the dog walkers manual. She seems to be using the swinging magnetic door too, so that's a plus. Love the lil egghead.

Casey , the black with some white Lab mix, is a young , energetic typical Lab mix, loves dogs and people. Once Butch has all his vaccinations, I can see those two, walking along  wonderfully.

I'm pleased to see that Pippa will be leaving soon. She is a nice Mastiff, a breed I was always a bit reticent  (hey, nice college word, huh?) to embrace. Just because their size and expression never made me feel welcome into their world, but as what happens, Pippa has changed my mind, and  I love her soft-as-slippers fur, and when she trusts you, after a minute, it's a pretty nice feeling, and she walks very well, no pulling at all. Real sweetheart.

If you have taken the tour lately, give yourself a few hours with some of the wonderful weekend crew, and you will get the real on-the-job training that will help you do the task quite well. Hook up with a senior volunteer, and you will pick up some of the tricks of the trade. Give this a chance, hey, who else has met a thousand dogs this year ?

A note to all: Just always walk around, doing this job with the thought bubble above your head that says : "What could go wrong here?"  and be guided accordingly. It'll keep you and the animals safe and secure, and it will keep your focus and attention to the task and make your experience so rewarding,  Grab a leash, and let's go. And it's always somewhat amazing to new vols that they can enter a meet and greet room, meet a nice big dog, who just is so relaxed and at ease. It because of all you walkers, we are just another set of legs ,and a leash to take a walk with, and that's it. Dave

From SOCAF Management:
All dogs need to be walked with two leashes at all times, whether they are being walked from the pen to their runs, or just a few feet.  No excuses, please!

The dogs must be on county property at all times when being walked.  They cannot be walked IN the street or across the street.

Smoking is not allowed while walking dogs.

NEW:  When walking dogs, please do not allow dogs to jump up onto any vehicles.
**********************************************************
TO ALL VOLUNTEERS:
If you see a dog limping, notice a lump, blood in the stool, etc., anything out of the ordinary, or if there is an incident with the dog, be sure to notify the supervisors, document the incident, and put it into the dog's file, keeping a copy for yourself.
********************************************************

Dog Walking Schedule:

Please check the dog-walking schedule below.
There are many days and time slots with little or no coverage.
Please e-mail me with the days and times you are able to cover.
If no one can cover, the dogs will either not get out in the morning or have to go back inside early on those days.
The minimum number of walkers needed by 9:00 a.m. is two in order to handle the task of getting dogs out for their first morning walk.

Volunteers are really needed early in the morning, 9:00 a.m. every day!  Even if   you can only help for a half hour or an hour, it would help.
The dogs are color coded.  New volunteers may NOT walk Red dogs.  Please pay attention to the color coding and the cage cards.  Red walkers' names in red type.
***************************
Important:  Please do not sign up for a shift if you aren't sure you can make it!  Other volunteers come in if there isn't enough coverage.  Some people have signed up for shifts and have been either late or not shown up at all.  We really need at least two people early in the morning--9:00--to get everyone out.

*Please make sure you notify me of your walking plans by Sunday night each week!
If you don't know your availability a week in advance and see we need help the next day, just send me an e-mail by 10 p.m. the night before, and I will put you on the schedule and notify the shelter.

Maximum number of walkers in the morning is 6 at one time, 4 in the afternoon.

REMINDER:  Every Tuesday is surgery day.  Find out who is having surgery when you come to walk the dogs.

To All Dog Walkers:
Please pay attention to the DO NOT WALK SIGNS!
If a card says do not walk, always ask management
before assuming the dog is walkable. This can change daily
depending on the dog's progress or health; therefore,

it is very important to always ask first.

FOSTER HELP NEEDED!!!
From Susan:
We are looking for volunteers to foster cats that need medical attention.  Medicine is usually administered from between 10-14 days.  This is not a very difficult thing to do.  You need a separate room to keep the cat away from your pets.
******************************************************
KITTEN FOSTERS NEEDED

If interested in helping out, please contact the shelter at socaf@ochd.org.
From Susan:

To all volunteers who wish to socialize with the cats when I am not there, PLEASE take only one cat out at a time.  Cats that should not be taken out have an X with a circle around the X.  These cats need time to adjust to the shelter.
Thank You, Susan
