From Joanna:

Yukon has left the building!  Joanna brought him to Rescue Ridge this morning.  He is now named Kai.

From Erma, Update Leo:

Hey Erma!
Sorry this is getting to you so late, I hope all is well with you, your family and of course everything at the shelter. Leo is doing wonderful, he has gained 6 pounds since we got him! Just wanted to update you guys with some pictures. I hope we see you soon!

Tueday's Update, from Dave:

Well, it had to rain one of these days I come in, and today was it. But everybody got rounded up and run out , and the only one left out for a little while was Benjamin because, well, he is Benjamin. So I fooled a bit with him outside after a quick walk. Be careful with the tan/white/black Shih-Tzu mix, he doesn't see real well, but do get him out, he poops like a racehorse!!!  The big, lovey young Mastiff, Pippa, is such a soft faced mushy. She went out yesterday, but is back. She's a very good walker, and she ended up in the meet and greet snuggled up peacefully.

B Side--the young black Lab mix may not seem real willing to come out, but give him a chance. He's a young impish , funny dog. And the American Bull Terrier, with the one black eye patch, I had her out, very housebroken, tried to tie up her magnetic door last Wednesday so she wouldn't be out all night. She doesn't like to use the door. Well, we got out and she gets a giddy up in her step and enjoys the attention, but has the  "no-go back radar " on full throttle!! She's another dog that's very house trained. We sat on the bench out front too. Carried the little piglet back when she balked, no big deal  .Kinda like that little egg head .

The trails out back and down the road are in terrific shape, all trimmed and nice, wide, free of tall weeds and stickers, etc.  A lovely spot to walk a woof. Just watch your footing with roots and all; wear proper footwear anywhere you walk. The forest elves did a sweet job neatening up the bumbles path !!.
Mysty and the Husky walked pretty well together. How the lovely Mysty is still here, is beyond me. I wasn't really in the mood to come in today, ya know, cold rainy, stuff to do, blah blah, blah, but yesterday, I saw Carol, walking Mysty, and stopped to talk with her a moment. She has damage to her Surf City home, so if she can pull away from what I'm sure is a ton of work to do, it kinda inspires  a lucky person to come on in. And it did.

Put out some new chain martingales, and the harness rack was organized/neatened up a bit too.  Hey, where are the sweaters? Are they in a bin in the shed or the back room between a&b side? Should be thinking about getting them out for the ready, maybe have  the bin in the locker room.  think it would make it easier (EASIER?? in the morning sweatering up the pack???)  If we take a dog into the meet and greet, sweater and harness up, then run them out, makes getaways less likely. And, if you have any issue at all getting a dog double-leashed up and harnessed, take him in the meet and greet to do it. Narrows the escape window a bit, and gets them away from the front of others runs, with the noise and all.

I found a note on a few cans of dog food out front, along with some dog aspirin and big treats,   "Our beloved dog just passed away, had cancer, and I thought that you could use his food and medicine, so it's not wasted." Whew, did that simple handscrawled note hit me right in the neck, a real lump maker. Wow.  Even now. that simple act speaks volumes about how that dog was probably loved. Ok, enough, you can now stop dripping on the computer keypad , as I'm thinking you all are. Dave

Update Homer and Amy, from Pack Ethic via Joanna:

Subject: Re: Hi buddy!!

Cool, I am happy for Diamond. Homer is great he loves playing with all the other dogs and was out in the field yesterday twice and didn't care about the horse. We have had no negative response from him whatsoever. Amy lol jumped the fence to get into the big yard and play with other dogs that were in there and she was fine. It was Beowulf and Zuki and they were romping around and acting like they knew each other forever. Both are little sweeties and are coming along better than expected.

From SOCAF Management:
All dogs need to be walked with two leashes at all times, whether they are being walked from the pen to their runs, or just a few feet.  No excuses, please!

If you see a dog limping, notice a lump, blood in the stool, etc., anything out of the ordinary, or if there is an incident with the dog, be sure to notify the supervisors, document the incident, and put it into the dog's file, keeping a copy for yourself.
********************************************************

Dog Walking Schedule:

Please check the dog-walking schedule below.
There are many days and time slots with little or no coverage.
Please e-mail me with the days and times you are able to cover.
If no one can cover, the dogs will either not get out in the morning or have to go back inside early on those days.
The minimum number of walkers needed by 9:00 a.m. is two in order to handle the task of getting dogs out for their first morning walk.

Volunteers are really needed early in the morning, 9:00 a.m. every day!  Even if   you can only help for a half hour or an hour, it would help.
The dogs are color coded.  New volunteers may NOT walk Red dogs.  Please pay attention to the color coding and the cage cards.  Red walkers' names in red type.
***************************
Important:  Please do not sign up for a shift if you aren't sure you can make it!  Other volunteers come in if there isn't enough coverage.  Some people have signed up for shifts and have been either late or not shown up at all.  We really need at least two people early in the morning--9:00--to get everyone out.

*Please make sure you notify me of your walking plans by Sunday night each week!
If you don't know your availability a week in advance and see we need help the next day, just send me an e-mail by 10 p.m. the night before, and I will put you on the schedule and notify the shelter.

Maximum number of walkers in the morning is 6 at one time, 4 in the afternoon.

REMINDER:  Every Tuesday is surgery day.  Find out who is having surgery when you come to walk the dogs.

To All Dog Walkers:
Please pay attention to the DO NOT WALK SIGNS!
If a card says do not walk, always ask management
before assuming the dog is walkable. This can change daily
depending on the dog's progress or health; therefore,

it is very important to always ask first.

FOSTER HELP NEEDED!!!
From Susan:
We are looking for volunteers to foster cats that need medical attention.  Medicine is usually administered from between 10-14 days.  This is not a very difficult thing to do.  You need a separate room to keep the cat away from your pets.
******************************************************
KITTEN FOSTERS NEEDED

If interested in helping out, please contact the shelter at socaf@ochd.org.
From Susan:

To all volunteers who wish to socialize with the cats when I am not there, PLEASE take only one cat out at a time.  Cats that should not be taken out have an X with a circle around the X.  These cats need time to adjust to the shelter.
Thank You, Susan
