From all of us to all of you..
We would like to take this moment to give a heartfelt Thank You to all who have come forward to help our group in this time of extreme need. We know that so many of you are trying to pick up the pieces of your lives after Sandy and have found that none of us are exempt from her wrath. Volunteers and staff alike have been affected by this storm! By the grace of all of you, we have managed to help feed the animals, give them blankets and towels to keep them dry, and a clean and comfortable bed to sleep on.

They have treats and love, and almost all have found their owners or new homes to live out a happy life.
These are the things that make us thankful. Without you and your donations, none of this is possible, and we appreciate your time and devotion to the voiceless that need us so.
Enjoy your Thanksgiving; find one thing to be thankful for--even if it be small--and last but not least, be kind to one another. Better days are coming, and we will all be better for it!
Happy Thanksgiving everyone!!!

Wednesday's notes and Thanksgiving Thoughts from Dave:
Had a nice crew show up today when the schedule looked a little light. Nice work Colin, Mary, Kelly, Pat D ( in the morning???),Sarah, and I dragged (well not really ) Paige in too this morning.
Here's the latest B side news: Run #15, orange and white older pit mix, walkable, nice dog, and there's a wonderfully marked black, with white,4 month pit puppy over there, so what can you add to that ? Nice white feet, tail tipped of course in white, female, just a pit pup, you know the deal there. The older white, with a black eye patch, American Bull Terrier, (you know, the Target dog?), little shy, older gal. Staff has had her out, and I had the chance to meet her too. Little donkey doesn't like going back inside though, but when she's up on shots, etc., she's a shy dog that'll quickly be liked by us all. I like her already.
The skinny, and I mean skinny, Doberman is walkable, though I didn't have her out. Had a good morning, and the crew had many chances to walk Lanie and the Husky (name escapes me?) and Mysty,as well as Barney and the pug/potbelly pig mix (well, not really , but c'mon, mix in a salad there, chubby!!). Spent some good time with Benjamin as well. He is a cartoon character, enjoyed the pen time a bunch .
Hung out the last of the old martingales that were in the deckbox. It is covered with so many blankets and comforters, but I'm not even annoyed about it. I'm thrilled because that's how much stuff was donated. There's no room inside, and you know comforters, blankets, and the like are gold around here. I'm grateful that people have brought in that stuff and the food donations too. A "thanks" is all we can say. It just really moves me that, in the midst of so much, so many problems and issues that are being dealt with out there, people still think about those who only have people like us to take them out and about.
I sometimes feel guilty that maybe there are other more important things to do and deal with, but I am sure, like you, we are all doing what we can on the non-canine/feline side. (Haha, I mean people stuff and things!) and still squeezing in time down at the Woofatorium, and The Cat-nasium. It's what we do, our corner of the world, and even now, they all need us maybe more.
With Thanksgiving tomorrow, I hope that you all are getting closer each day to establishing a safe home again, closer to warm, secure evenings, and have the love and support of family near by. I never took a hot shower for granted before, and I won't ever take power, and heat, and the rest for granted again, I think.
I'm truly lucky and grateful for a bunch this Thanksgiving, but know still, I worry and wonder about all of those, and us, that are still dealing, and will be dealing with the aftereffects of the storm, and that's the thought of all the volunteers as well. Be safe. Dave

Hi Dog Walkers, If you will, please get the days and times you will be able to walk dogs in the upcoming week to Joanne Eckert no later than Sunday night each week. I need to turn in the schedule to the HD on Monday mornings. Thanks so much for volunteering your time for the animals! It is greatly appreciated!!
**********************************************************
Love our dogs? Then adopt one as a Shelter Pup and FRIENDS will get a portion of the sale! Shelter Pups has turned a select group of dogs from our shelter into amazing and realistic plush pups. Check out Casper and wonderful Sherman! It's a great way to “adopt” one of our dogs and help our volunteer FRIENDS group at the same time. Shelter Pups can also make customs of your very own dog. Check it out and bring one of our dogs home as a Shelter Pup!

Anyone who needs a T-shirt, please e-mail Debbie at nyrfan12@aol.com. Debbie will be taking over for Erma. Send her the size you need, and she'll leave it in the locker room with your name attached.

From SOCAF Management:
All dogs need to be walked with two leashes at all times, whether they are being walked from the pen to their runs, or just a few feet. No excuses, please!
The dogs must be on county property at all times when being walked. They cannot be walked IN the street or across the street.
Smoking is not allowed while walking dogs.
NEW: When walking dogs, please do not allow dogs to jump up onto any vehicles.
NEW: When walking dogs, please do not allow dogs to jump up onto any vehicles.

TO ALL VOLUNTEERS:
If you see a dog limping, notice a lump, blood in the stool, etc., anything out of the ordinary, or if there is an incident with the dog, be sure to notify the supervisors, document the incident, and put it into the dog's file, keeping a copy for yourself.
********************************************************
Dog Walking Schedule:
Please check the dog-walking schedule below.
There are many days and time slots with little or no coverage.
Please e-mail me with the days and times you are able to cover.
If no one can cover, the dogs will either not get out in the morning or have to go back inside early on those days.
The minimum number of walkers needed by 9:00 a.m. is two in order to handle the task of getting dogs out for their first morning walk.
Volunteers are really needed early in the morning, 9:00 a.m. every day! Even if you can only help for a half hour or an hour, it would help.
The dogs are color coded. New volunteers may NOT walk Red dogs. Please pay attention to the color coding and the cage cards. Red walkers' names in red type.
***************************
Important: Please do not sign up for a shift if you aren't sure you can make it! Other volunteers come in if there isn't enough coverage. Some people have signed up for shifts and have been either late or not shown up at all. We really need at least two people early in the morning--9:00--to get everyone out.
*Please make sure you notify me of your walking plans by Sunday night each week!
If you don't know your availability a week in advance and see we need help the next day, just send me an e-mail by 10 p.m. the night before, and I will put you on the schedule and notify the shelter.
Maximum number of walkers in the morning is 6 at one time, 4 in the afternoon.

To All Dog Walkers:
Please pay attention to the DO NOT WALK SIGNS!
If a card says do not walk, always ask management
before assuming the dog is walkable. This can change daily
depending on the dog's progress or health; therefore,
it is very important to always ask first.

FOSTER HELP NEEDED!!!
From Susan:
We are looking for volunteers to foster cats that need medical attention. Medicine is usually administered from between 10-14 days. This is not a very difficult thing to do. You need a separate room to keep the cat away from your pets.
******************************************************
KITTEN FOSTERS NEEDED
If interested in helping out, please contact the shelter at socaf@ochd.org.
From Susan:
To all volunteers who wish to socialize with the cats when I am not there, PLEASE take only one cat out at a time. Cats that should not be taken out have an X with a circle around the X. These cats need time to adjust to the shelter.
Thank You, Susan
