MEETING

Volunteer meeting: Saturday, April 28th, 12 noon to 2pm at the Millcreek Community Center in Beach Haven West. Lunch will be served. If you want to bake a cake it would be appreciated. This is a very important meeting. There will be some changes to the program but most important is your input. Whether you’re a new volunteer or an old fogie, we can’t do without you.

It is time we speak our minds.

Reminder: We hope to see YOU at the FRIENDS ANNUAL MEETING SATURDAY, APRIL 28, 12 noon, Millcreek Community Center, 1199 Millcreek Road, Manahawkin.

We have lost some of our key people. NEEDED: someone for the position of corresponding secretary - please contact Kathy Gross (609) 978-2474 for information if you might be interested in filling this need. Other current officers will be up for election at 2013 annual meeting.

To vote for corresponding secretary and approval of the Bylaws, you need to be a member of Friends. At the meeting, purchase our book “Because Someone Rescued Me” ($35) or the Jimmy White “Two Cities” CD ($10) and automatically receive a membership in the Friends.

Well, the rain, other than a drop or two, held off even as I left after noon. A really good lineup to utilize tomorow, would be:

2- Tinkerbell, skip 3 , 4- Repete, 5-Poco, 6- Soco, 7-Bella, 8-Jemma. (please don't anyone go looking for 'Skip', okay, Coleen??? hahah)

The thought that Bella might not like men is a myth. I spent a bit of time with her, and she is such a kind hearted soul, isn't she? What a lovely lady!! Soft and sweet, with that FACE!! She can just melt you, right? And Jemma, who needs to put on a couple pounds, (Here!! TAKE MY extra pounds!!), is a nice gal also. They are quite good next to each other outside. So the lineup was set, and were out till past noon.

B siders are the small Beagle, a gray Pit, may be walkable, (CHECK!!), and Casper, the friendly ghost, who gave me quite a "BOO" this morning. After the A siders got out and set up and walks were in effect, I walked up to his B side run, and he was curled up on his bed. I stared at him for a full minute trying to see if he was breathing. I thought "omigosh ! he had a heart attack during the night!!" Then, he opened one eye, looked over at me, yawned, stretched, and as if to say " Oh, its that time already? I'm ready to walk!" Well, I'm the one who was startled!! I think he may be deaf, so keep that in mind. I guess that's not the worst thing here at Camp Canine. At least he gets to sleep in; the 8:30 feeding ruckus doesn't bother him a bit. A little leash bitey for a few minutes,but on the "International Scale of Leash Biting " ( LOLA!!) he's a 1.5 . ( Lola, of course, was the same number as the Mt. St. Helens blast, back in 1980. An 11, on a scale of 1-10!!! Ok, Lola, luv u tho!!!

Casper looks like a white Ginger to me!!! Ginger's home of course , hooray for her and her humans!!!!! Scoot's taking the breakup a little harder than last time, ah, we'll always have October,.......and November, part of December, then March and April!! Oh, Scoot turned 10 yrs old, but he don't act it !! So that's good !!

Oh, IMPORTANT!!!! I took off 4 or 5 martingales that were on wrong. And then, they are just a tight collar, so give them a look over and be sure on the proper expansion ability. The 2 metal buckles gotta have room to move. And a not so important note, we have plenty of pink, blue camo martingales, so if you can, please put the pink on the females, and others on the boys, This is NOT coming from me, but from Bruiser and Bella. Bruiser was like " Can YOO BELEEV THIS COLLA??? IM A BIG BOY !!!" And Bella, who is too classy a lady to complain, just sighed, looked away, sorta embarrassed by it, any hooo!!!

You want to see neat stuff, tshirts magnets, etc, go look at " dogisgood.com. I got a "dog walkers union " shirt!!! Lotta cool stuff, actually, believe they have feline stuff too, like magnets etc. so go look!!

I'm going over my notes regarding the meeting saturday, and I wrote down one concern...... are there gonna be chocholate chip AND oatmeal raisin cookies??? Or WHAT ?? just asking. But do write down any points and concerns so we can address them there.

Put a can of Deep Woods OFF in your cars "dog walking kit." ( WHHAAAATTT!!!??? You don't have a little dog walking kit in you car? extra sox, t -shirt, gloves, towel, sunscreen? hat or visor?? Okay, when you step into a dog pool this summer,(and you WILL!) or when we're dog washing, you are gonna thank me because ya got dry sox and a shirt handy!!! Again, just saying!!! ok , see ya at the meeting dave.

When it's warmer out and the dogs start getting outside baths, when you go home, your spouse or kids are like "Hey, you smell good, new shampoo? " Ahhh, yeahhh, sort of!!! haha

My Scooter is 10 years old now.

Joanna asked for additional Bella pictures when it looked as if she needed to go to a rescue. Fortunately, Bella passed her temperament test the second time it was administered, so rescue is no longer necessary. Meanwhile, volunteers Carolyn and Eric took a few pictures of her yesterday:

The ticks and fleas are loving this weather. Contrary to what I wrote last week, Trish informed me that the dogs cannot be walked on the road, but can be walked on the path in front of the recycling center or on the path behind the shelter near the fence.

Dog walkers should not enter the building prior to 8:30 a.m.

Tank cannot be left alone in the outdoor pens. He can be walked only, unless you plan to stay out there with him.

All new walkers may walk green dogs on their own once they have gone through orientation. New walkers may walk yellow dogs once they have been with a red walker and told by the red walker they are okay to move on.

Green walkers please look for volunteers with the red dot on their badge. They will help you with anything you need. You may always call me if you run into a problem or have any concerns. Fran - 609-660-0110

It has been asked of us volunteers to not come to the shelter during Rabies clinic. They are always so busy during one of these events, and since we cant walk dogs during this time it would be great if we were just there from 8:30 to 10:30 and then again after at 1:00. I know I was there one day and saw the madness and well I couldn't get out the door fast enough!!!! CRAZY BUSY!!!

All dogs need to be walked with two leashes at all times, whether they are being walked from the pen to their runs, or just a few feet. No excuses, please!

The dogs must be on county property at all times when being walked. They cannot be walked IN the street or across the street.

Smoking is not allowed while walking dogs.

TO ALL VOLUNTEERS:

If you see a dog limping, notice a lump, blood in the stool, etc., anything out of the ordinary, or if there is an incident with the dog, be sure to notify the supervisors, document the incident, and put it into the dog's file, keeping a copy for yourself.

Dog Walking Schedule:

Please check the dog-walking schedule below.

There are many days and time slots with little or no coverage.

Please e-mail me with the days and times you are able to cover.

If no one can cover, the dogs will either not get out in the morning or have to go back inside early on those days.

The minimum number of walkers needed by 8:30 a.m. is two in order to handle the task of getting dogs out for their first morning walk.

Volunteers are really needed early in the morning, 8:30 a.m. every day! Even if you can only help for a half hour or an hour, it would help.

The dogs are color coded. New volunteers may NOT walk Red dogs. Please pay attention to the color coding and the cage cards. Red walkers' names in red type.

Important: Please do not sign up for a shift if you aren't sure you can make it! Other volunteers come in if there isn't enough coverage. Some people have signed up for shifts and have been either late or not shown up at all. We really need at least two people early in the morning--8 or 8:30--to get everyone out.

The Friends of the Southern Ocean County Animal Shelter

The mission statement of our group is to offer an additional avenue of care

for the animals that the Shelter cannot cope with. These are the animals that

have catastrophic physical problems or illnesses which need special medical care.

Animals that would otherwise have died or been euthanized and would have never

known the happiness of a loving home.

We also provide much needed support to the shelter. We help take care of physical

needs such as an industrial size washing machine, blankets, food, halters,

and an outdoor cat cage. We also provided swinging "doggy doors" for all

the kennels at the shelter, thereby making it much more cost effective.

In the summer the heat stays out and in the winter the heat stays in.

These are just a small sample of the needs of the shelter we provide.

We are a local to LBI and Manahawkin organization. Our founders are

very active in the Southern Ocean County Animal Shelter and decided

they needed to more. So Dottie and Eleanor got together and made a

commitment to do what they could to make the animals lives at the

shelter as good as they could be, until they found a loving home.

FOSTER HELP NEEDED!!!

From Susan:

We are looking for volunteers to foster cats that need medical attention. Medicine is usually administered from between 10-14 days. This is not a very difficult thing to do. You need a separate room to keep the cat away from your pets.

To all volunteers who wish to socialize with the cats when I am not there, PLEASE take only one cat out at a time. Cats that should not be taken out have an X with a circle around the X. These cats are not friendly.
