Jemma was adopted today!

Piper was adopted today!

Tinkerbell and Bruiser were brought to Pack Ethic Rescue by Nancy and Joanna today.
New on the B side:

Harley, female Rottweiler mix
Halo, female Lab mix

Poco likes Lola's chair, too.
From Dave:

Boy, some days are certainly better than others around the woof warehouse and the lion tamers den today.  It started off a little bit sweatshirtyish, cool, but what a day it turned into. First of all, the  "Pittification Transportation Team " come rolling in, (Joanna and Nancy) and scooped up the Beautiful Bruiser, and the goddess of mischief, Tinkerbell, off to PACK ETHIC!!   I think Nancy's vehicle left with the front wheels off the ground, and the tailpipe dragging with the cargo area filled to the brim with chubby Pittiies!!! So ya start a day like that, not bad, John and I got them out and walked/fed/tamed a bit, burned off some foolin' aroundness before their trip. See ya !! Enjoy !!

So, with the arrival of Linda, Casey, Drew, and Stevie, the walks were in full effect, rotating 3 in, 3 out like clockwork. Jen B showed up at 1130 with Erma not far behind, so, wow, what work you can get done with just a few good people, a few great dogs, and a lovely cool day.

Sweetie Pie and Sonny ( young yellow Lab) are terrific dogs. Greta is walkable(gray pit with white markings) but she's still little leary of it all, so she was walked in the general area, to observe other good dogs good behavior. Worked with Sonny on how to get in and out of the magnetic door, used a tennis ball, and he picked it right up, After a awhile, I even had no trouble getting in and out that swinging door either!!!

There were so many good combos I forgot em all, but of course, the Soco/Poco, and Repete/ Casper were 2 nice sets,  and Jemma/ Bella, worked too. Bella is a great lady, I really love that velvety smushbugaboo, don't we all !! OH!! Got a photo of Poco in the blue  Lola chair !!!  Funny how they do like sitting in those chairs .

Casey had a young lady on the tour who looks quite promising. And with summer coming, we should pick up some fresh legs in the form of college students, ( including my  Paige, who when we last checked, was moved up from reallly light light green walker, to just very light kelly, but not really green green walker, hahahahh)

Hey, you know who had a spring in his step?? The old German Shepherd, Bear!! He enjoyed the stroll today as well!! He tolerated all those goofy Pitties, being, well PITTIES!!! He  was a nice sight to see today. Good for him. Bear has a wistful expression, a dog who grows on you. I underestimated him, so I'm glad I got to see him this morning .

Of course, we had to WAKE Casper up, he doesn't hear, but he's the cutest thing too .Be aware that Repete has a boil/blister/ raw spot on inside thigh, right rear, Doctor will look at it tomorrow.  Staff was advised, and Lisa came out to inspect him too. It's probably tender, but didn't stop him from taking part in the walks today. Nice day, and that is a fine mix of well behaved dogs there now. ( No, Bruiser, and Tink, not because you two left!! Stop, miss ya already!!)  See ya.  Dave

From Fran:

I must say, the meeting was informative; the food was great, wonderful turn out.  Congrats to Mike for his contribution and award, well deserved. The Lisa B. Flynn Award will hang in a place at the shelter. They may give us a place in the bathroom, but that is ok, we will place it front of the toilet.  Can’t miss it that way.  Joking.
Thanks to everyone for speaking their mind.  My suggestion for those who feel they were treated with disrespect, please write up a memo with the time, date and nature of incident and who was present.  You can give the report to me and I will present it to Dottie and we will address it with Brian.  No one should be treated with disrespect, yelled at, humiliated or feel intimidated in any way. That is bullying and unacceptable.  I take that very seriously.
I love you guys; you are the best. I personally feel a deep sense of pride in our organization.  I think we have come a long way. As you heard today, we are more than dog walkers--we are HEROS to the animals we love, and we will never give up. Lisa and Cindy, you are missed and loved and never forgotten.  Thank you from me and all the animals we serve with honor and love.
In case you either weren't at the Annual Meeting or just would like to see it again, here is the wonderful slideshow Mike Bagley put together of the cats and dogs we have loved over the past year:

UPDATE Gracie:

It has been over 5 months since we picked up Gracie from the shelter
in Manahawkin. She is still the sweet, adorable, well-behaved, playful
girl we first met with one exception. She was lost and you could see
it in her eyes. An emptiness. A sadness. Well no more!! That lost,
empty look is gone and replaced with expressive eyes that look at
directly at us and a tail always wagging. Happy girl. Happy us.
Happy weimaraner sister, Sasha (as long as equal amounts of play, love
and attention and treats are given). Gracie loves her daddy. For
Father's Day she is getting herself a tag that says "I rescued Jerry".

She was trained, socialized and very well cared for at some point in
her life. She is perfect. When I come home from a bad day at work or
things bug me or I worry about silly things, my dogs are there to make
it all better. I love being with my dogs. If people were like Gracie
and Sasha, this world would be a much better place. I occasionally
wonder if her owner or family ever contacted the shelter to find out
about her. I would have done anything I could to keep her. She has 2
"quirks" that we don't see much anymore-- she chases light reflections
that shine on the wall which we didn't want to become an obsession so
we worked through discouraging that behavior and she is no longer is
obsessed. She crawls under our bed once in awhile which is not bad
but it's like she is playing "hide and seek". So cute.

Our Tri-State Weimaraner Rescue Annual Picnic is next Saturday May 5th
in Lumberton, NJ and Gracie will be meeting everyone for the first
time. We are so excited. She still wears the collar we put on her at
the shelter but I splurged and went on Etsy.com and bought her a
handmade collar and matching leash to step out in. I will take a pic
and send it.

I hope you continue to work with the animal shelter in Manahawkin.
Please let me know what type of items you need donated and I would
like to send a monetary donation (don't get excited, I didn't win any
lottery) so to who and where would I send it?

Yours truly,

Lynda and Jerry Kuhn

UPDATE Sedge:

I wanted to update you on my Harry boy, aka Sedge. He is just the love of our lives. I never thought I could love another dog as much as my last dog, Elvis...but Harry is my loveball.

I tell everyone how wonderful adoption is. It might be tricky at first, but you have no idea what this little guy or gal has gone through. If you give them love and time to assimilate, you get to have the love of your life, like we do...Harry. :)

We have a lot of walkable dogs on both A and B, so the more walkers, the better!   Please review the schedule below
and let me know if you can help.

The ticks and fleas are loving this weather.  Contrary to what I wrote last week, Trish informed me that the dogs cannot be walked on the road, but can be walked on the path in front of the recycling center or on the path behind the shelter near the fence.

********************************************

Dog walkers should not enter the building prior to 8:30 a.m.

Tank cannot be left alone in the outdoor pens.  He can be walked only, unless you plan to stay out there with him.

Thank you.

Second Chance Pet Adoption Day - May 5
Anyone who could help please sign up at sign up desk.  I will have the flyer and sign up sheet there by Friday.  Anyone who would like to take charge of event to call Fran at 609-660-0110.

************************************

All new walkers may walk green dogs on their own once they have gone through orientation. New walkers may walk yellow dogs once they have been with a red walker and told by the red walker they are okay to move on.

Green walkers please look for volunteers with the red dot on their badge.  They will help you with anything you need. You may always call me if you run into a problem or have any concerns. Fran - 609-660-0110

From Connie:

It has been asked of us volunteers to not come to the shelter during Rabies clinic. They are always so busy during one of these events, and since we cant walk dogs during this time it would be great if we were just there from 8:30 to 10:30 and then again after at 1:00. I know I was there one day and saw the madness and well I couldn't get out the door fast enough!!!!   CRAZY BUSY!!!

****************************************************************

From SOCAF Management:

All dogs need to be walked with two leashes at all times, whether they are being walked from the pen to their runs, or just a few feet.  No excuses, please!

The dogs must be on county property at all times when being walked.  They cannot be walked IN the street or across the street.

Smoking is not allowed while walking dogs.

**********************************************************

TO ALL VOLUNTEERS:

If you see a dog limping, notice a lump, blood in the stool, etc., anything out of the ordinary, or if there is an incident with the dog, be sure to notify the supervisors, document the incident, and put it into the dog's file, keeping a copy for yourself.

********************************************************

Dog Walking Schedule:

Please check the dog-walking schedule below.
There are many days and time slots with little or no coverage.
Please e-mail me with the days and times you are able to cover.
If no one can cover, the dogs will either not get out in the morning or have to go back inside early on those days.

The minimum number of walkers needed by 8:30 a.m. is two in order to handle the task of getting dogs out for their first morning walk.

Volunteers are really needed early in the morning, 8:30 a.m. every day!  Even if you can only help for a half hour or an hour, it would help.
The dogs are color coded.  New volunteers may NOT walk Red dogs.  Please pay attention to the color coding and the cage cards.  Red walkers' names in red type.
***************************
Important:  Please do not sign up for a shift if you aren't sure you can make it!  Other volunteers come in if there isn't enough coverage.  Some people have signed up for shifts and have been either late or not shown up at all.  We really need at least two people early in the morning--8 or 8:30--to get everyone out.

The mission statement of our group is to offer an additional avenue of care
for the animals that the Shelter cannot cope with. These are the animals that
have catastrophic physical problems or illnesses which need special medical care.
Animals that would otherwise have died or been euthanized and would have never
known the happiness of a loving home.

We also provide much needed support to the shelter. We help take care of physical
needs such as an industrial size washing machine, blankets, food, halters,
and an outdoor cat cage.  We also provided swinging "doggy doors" for all
the kennels at the shelter, thereby making it much more cost effective.
In the summer the heat stays out and in the winter the heat stays in.
These are just a small sample of the needs of the shelter we provide.
We are a local to LBI and Manahawkin organization. Our founders are
very active in the Southern Ocean County Animal Shelter and decided
they needed to more. So Dottie and Eleanor got together and made a
commitment to do what they could to make the animals lives at the
shelter as good as they could be, until they found a loving home.

FOSTER HELP NEEDED!!!
From Susan:
We are looking for volunteers to foster cats that need medical attention.  Medicine is usually administered from between 10-14 days.  This is not a very difficult thing to do.  You need a separate room to keep the cat away from your pets.

**********************************************************

KITTEN FOSTERS NEEDED

If interested in helping out, please contact the shelter at socaf@ochd.org.

From Susan:

To all volunteers who wish to socialize with the cats when I am not there, PLEASE take only one cat out at a time.  Cats that should not be taken out have an X with a circle around the X.  These cats are not friendly.
Thank You Susan
