Update Casper:
[ed. Newer volunteers may now know about our Casper, a deaf pure white Pittie whose owner flew here from Colorado to adopt him. He won all of our hearts when he was here.]

Well Gang,
A couple of you had inquired about Casper. Thanks for the requests. Lots to report, sorry about the delays. My dad had been ill for the better part of a year and I had been in Chicago much of that time. Then, he passed away in late September and I have been helping my mom deal with all the things associated with that. Additionally, I needed time to explain some things about Casper. Let's say, he has been a bit of a challenge, as I will describe in more detail below.
Starting out, just to highlight, only a partial list:
- TV remote
- Blood Glucose meter. (yes meter, case ... the whole deal)
- Cord REMOVED from a Dremel tool (small drill/grinder)
- Purse straps (completely off)
- Shoes (fair number)
- Backpack strap
- Vacuum cleaner attachments ... all shapes and size, which now have new shapes and sizes.
- Tennis balls, by the dozen ... other balls, by the dozen.
- Magazines
- Turn signal lever in my van ... (in minutes). Tons of tissues and napkins. bed comforter, t-shirts etc...
These are things Casper has decided to try and "modify". And there are more ... he has tried bolts (moves them around for me when I am working on my car), loves to destroy water bottles ... full or empty, etc.. Virtually nothing is safe from him "sampling".

Yes, and we know you professionals will say that he just does not have other things to chew on. Well, not really true. The cost of his chewies, etc.. is more than our monthly cable bill, and chews are constantly available.

Casper likes to climb ladders ... yes, we have 10 foot ceilings. Be near the top and he may be underfoot on the way down. He tries to climb trees. He has even attempted to get on kitchen counters. He regularly is on top of my 42" high work bench in the garage. Clears it, not stepping up on anything to get there ... pure leap.  Likes the ping pong table in the basement (watching Kathy wrap presents etc..). He likes to be on patio table, chairs or ... a couple months ago, tried to peek at a puzzle my daughter was putting together on the sun room table. 1000 pieces, about 1/2 done. It became "start over" time, with pieces on the window sill and down the heating vents.

Casper has 2 speeds, full out or dead. He sleeps like a brick, or he is just wound up. At 70lbs he weighs 12 lbs less than Balboa (our other Deaf Albino Pit Bull), but eats MORE THAN twice as much, honestly twice!

Casper loves to run next to the lawn tractor ... an obsession. Just likes to follow or run next to. The back yard is fenced and he runs safely ... not near the tractor or biting at things. The front yard not being fenced, we don't let him do that run. But Casper is often obsessed. He has once left the house to get to the front ... via my daughter's bedroom window ... blew out the screen and did a 4 foot drop. You can find nose prints on every inside window ... he is insanely curious. No butt is safe from sniffing ... and yes, he is scolded often. He is also singular of purpose ... hard to deter and VERY determined to get what he wants at times. He is the most headstrong dog we have EVER had, and we have had bunches.

Having said that, we just love the snot out of him! But, he IS in the category of high maintenance. We are pretty sure he may have been too much of a handful for most other potential adopters. At over 2 years old now, he will probably never be your normal peaceful puppy as he gets older.

For us, things have changed a lot. We lost two of our bigger dogs just recently, the Rot-Lab Winston (my constant sidekick) and a Bulldog-Lab, Copa. Winston was due to just old age, 13 ... hips gave out, then a seizure a couple month later. Copa, bone cancer. He was only 7. We had lost Onyx, a full HUGE Lab a month or so before getting Casper. He was 13, also bone cancer ... unrelated to Copa's, and different type of cancer.

So we are down to just two dogs ... deaf/albinos, Casper and Balboa. It is a whole different dynamic. They no longer have the other dogs to "hear for them". They both used the others as cues to go out and come in, or when someone is coming home, or the doorbell, etc.. it is very different ... especially when it comes time to call them in occasionally. Balboa and Casper tend to look at each other and not the door where we are waving and trying to get their attention.

Now to the major problems. Casper is more than playful, and can annoy Balboa. They will start to play, then it escalates. Because neither can hear when the other is getting serious there is often no stopping them until one of them gets hurt or we intervene. And intervening two fighting pit bulls is very scary and dangerous. Casper used to be the same way with the bigger dogs, but when they heard him get in distress a bit, or change his tone they would back off. With the deaf ones it is a problem. Neither knows when to quit. We have gotten really good at knowing when something is likely to happen and do a good job of preventing it. Occasionally when they run outside there will be little impromptu skirmishes that result in some scratches or cuts. But, truly, MOST of the time they are best buddies, chasing squirrels or birds or whatever. Balboa is a ball player, Casper is not, but likes to have a ball in his mouth and just run with Balboa as he shags and returns. That is actually quite funny and they both get good exercise. Ok, now the biggest problem. Casper can get VERY aggressive! This is usually when he is very tired. And usually when he is eating or there is leftover food he does not want to eat or is protecting. And the other dog does not need to be even near the food. The other dogs can be 20 feet away and Casper will literally attack them! He did this with the other bigger dogs who have passed away, and will do it with Balboa now. Balboa can get very reactive and both have gotten hurt. Balboa usually wins, and it seems Casper never really learns not to take him on. But he is very determined. We know of it now and can prevent it for the most part. We have them eat in different rooms most of the time. And when Casper is finished, bringing up his bowl so even he cannot get too it ends his protection mode immediately and it is just like there is no issue at all. He will occasionally try to steal a chew from Balboa, and they get into it a bit, but that is mostly playful and never results in anything.

As mentioned, we manage this. We have been leaving them together more often when we leave. It seems they just sleep (we have spied on them. It is not that hard to do with deaf dogs :-) ) Our only fear would be if we needed to leave them in the care of someone. We had to do this a bit when my dad passed away, Kathy met me in Chicago and our daughter had to stay and juggle her job and taking care of the guys (plus the miniature horses).

All in all Casper is happy and healthy, although both of the White Wonders have a fair number of scars. But again, they are happy with one another and we love them both. They sleep in various states of laying on top of one another and use each other for picking up cues.

We have tried a number of things to keep Casper out of his aggressive moods, but have not settled on anything that works other than preventing the conditions that make it worse. I, personally, don't like avoidance methodology because the danger remains. We are concerned about our grandkids, although Casper is always friendly with ALL humans ... and even other dogs. Our kids have three dogs and they are here often. And Casper got along with our other 3 very well  most of the time.

If any of you have thoughts on quelling Casper's occasional attack modes, I would love to talk with you about it. And again, Casper is a joy, and funny and beautiful nearly all of the time. We are still very happy to have him.

Thanks for asking. And I hope you at least got a few smiles out of this. Sorry about pics/videos. I have just not been in a mind to put that together, but delayed this waiting for me to do it. I thought it will be better to send it than wait any longer. I promise pictures, however, I am AGAIN in Chicago and will be until early January. I hope you all have a very nice holiday and New Years. And thank you for Casper and all that came with him :-)

Update: Just two weeks ago my daughter Beth brought home a 12 lb English Bull dog named Gizmo. She is fitting in fine, but we have been cautious with both of the albinos. They have adjusted nicely and tolerate her gnawing on their legs occasionally. But we are, obviously cautious. Also by the way, Casper has filled out a bit and tips the scales at about 70 lbs, now ... still trim enough to clearly jump up on a 42" workbench with ease. He is sincerely athletic ... and quite fast, as a fox learned trying to get out of the yard one morning. He was a bit TOO confident and Casper nearly got a piece of his tail as he bolted over the fence. I was relieved that he did not follow suit because I am sure he could easily clear the fence if he wanted to. He HAS managed to climb over it once ... and don't really know why he has not done it again, but very happy he has not.

Dog Walking Schedule:

The minimum number of walkers needed by 9:00 a.m. is two in order to handle the task of getting dogs out for their first morning walk.

Volunteers are really needed early in the morning, 9:00 a.m. every day!  Even if   you can only help for a half hour or an hour, it would help.
The dogs are color coded.  New volunteers may NOT walk Red dogs.  Please pay attention to the color coding and the cage cards.  Red walkers' names in red type.
***************************
Important:  Please do not sign up for a shift if you aren't sure you can make it!  Other volunteers come in if there isn't enough coverage.  Some people have signed up for shifts and have been either late or not shown up at all.  We really need at least two people early in the morning--9:00--to get everyone out.
*Please try to notify me of your walking plans by Sunday night each week.
**UPDATE:  Because sometimes you may not know even the night before if you will be able to come in and walk dogs the next day, it is now acceptable for you to call, e-mail, or text me, not the shelter, by 8:30 a.m. on the day you want to come in.  I will then put you on the schedule and notify management.  You can come in as long as there aren't the maximum number of walkers scheduled for that particular day and shift.
Maximum number of walkers in the morning is 6 at one time, 4 in the afternoon.
Please make sure no dogs are left outside or in the meet-and-greet room when the last volunteer leaves.
REMINDER:  Every Tuesday is surgery day.  Find out who is having surgery when you come to walk the dogs.
New Red Walker Policy:  New red walkers must be accompanied by another red walker for a period of several weeks.  New red walkers have a double asterisk by their names.

**KITTEN FOSTERS NEEDED ASAP**

We are in need of fosters for our Bottle Baby kittens!

It's that time of the year again.  We need willing fosters who
can handle a litter of bottle babies, which require round-the-clock feeding. Yes, this means night time as well! We supply all the necessities, including a cage. Compensation will be given for your loving time and devotion.

We also need regular kitten fosters, as well, for a maximum of three kittens. Please contact Susan at pink49puffer@inbox.com if you would like to help us during this time! Thank you so much!

From Susan:

To all volunteers who wish to socialize with the cats when I am not there, PLEASE take only one cat out at a time.  Cats that should not be taken out have an X with a circle around the X.  These cats need time to adjust to the shelter.
Thank You, Susan
