Thursday's Chilly News from Dave:
Well, it's winter alright!! The day started at 20 degrees, and we were all beaten to the front door by Catherine, who was in and out at 8 am, taking Barney to the Vet, good work. Good work also, Susan and Leslie, who rounded up hounds big and small, and got it done early. I had the pleasure of spending a solid hour with B Sider Zeus, the big, friendly young Irish Wolfhound, a very nice chap, looks like he should be wearing a HoundsTooth cap (well, yeah, he is a hound!) and smoking a Sherlock Holmes pipe. He has that kinda look, a lovely walker, and all, but a real donkey going back in. I heard he is scheduled to go Rescue Ridge soon.
Another doll to spend time with is Lexi, the Rotti, and it is actually hard to tell her apart from the big, stuffed, Rotti doll that's on the B side. I took to calling her "Lena" because she is a "leaner," you know, the kind that just wants to lean into you anytime you stop, a very pretty and sweet gal. Just a real delight. I needed a good dog or two this morning, with the fact that one of the best boys of the year, Dylan, made his way up to the North Pole yesterday, courtesy of Joanna and Nancy handling the reins. And Hemi will really shine up there; good for Lola as well.
The trails really look good snow covered, and walking there, without the wind, is very pleasant.

Click on this ink every day! Fill it in and indicate it's for the Friends of the Southern Ocean County Animal Shelter. There's a $1,000 prize for the winning shelter. Vote early, and vote often.

We need to sell more tickets to the Breakfast with Santa event. Connie has to give the totals to Applebee's soon, and if many more aren't sold, the event will be canceled. E-mail Connie for the link to the tickets and please sell them to your friends/coworkers.
From Connie:
Please remember that the Fridays fundraiser starts Monday! Print out some flyers and hand them out. You can also go to Fridays and hand them out, as well. Starts 11 to 11 for 5 Mondays Also we need throughout December.
PLEASE share the YANKEE CANDLE FUNDRAISER! It is still on until 1/5. I just got another check from them, and we made almost $600.00 for doing nothing but sharing!

Dog Walking Schedule:
The minimum number of walkers needed by 9:00 a.m. is two in order to handle the task of getting dogs out for their first morning walk.
Volunteers are really needed early in the morning, 9:00 a.m. every day! Even if you can only help for a half hour or an hour, it would help.
The dogs are color coded. New volunteers may NOT walk Red dogs. Please pay attention to the color coding and the cage cards. Red walkers' names in red type.
***************************
Important: Please do not sign up for a shift if you aren't sure you can make it! Other volunteers come in if there isn't enough coverage. Some people have signed up for shifts and have been either late or not shown up at all. We really need at least two people early in the morning--9:00--to get everyone out.
*Please try to notify me of your walking plans by Sunday night each week.
**UPDATE: Because sometimes you may not know even the night before if you will be able to come in and walk dogs the next day, it is now acceptable for you to call, e-mail, or text me, not the shelter, by 8:30 a.m. on the day you want to come in. I will then put you on the schedule and notify management. You can come in as long as there aren't the maximum number of walkers scheduled for that particular day and shift.
Maximum number of walkers in the morning is 6 at one time, 4 in the afternoon.
Please make sure no dogs are left outside or in the meet-and-greet room when the last volunteer leaves.
REMINDER: Every Tuesday is surgery day. Find out who is having surgery when you come to walk the dogs.
New Red Walker Policy: New red walkers must be accompanied by another red walker for a period of several weeks. New red walkers have a double asterisk by their names.

**KITTEN FOSTERS NEEDED ASAP**
We are in need of fosters for our Bottle Baby kittens!
It's that time of the year again. We need willing fosters who
can handle a litter of bottle babies, which require round-the-clock feeding. Yes, this means night time as well! We supply all the necessities, including a cage. Compensation will be given for your loving time and devotion.
We also need regular kitten fosters, as well, for a maximum of three kittens. Please contact Susan at pink49puffer@inbox.com if you would like to help us during this time! Thank you so much!

KITTEN FOSTERS NEEDED
If interested in helping out, please contact the shelter at socaf@ochd.org.
From Susan:
To all volunteers who wish to socialize with the cats when I am not there, PLEASE take only one cat out at a time. Cats that should not be taken out have an X with a circle around the X. These cats need time to adjust to the shelter.
Thank You, Susan

PLEASE take a moment to watch this video to understand how to use HL correctly.
Our Food Pantry at the shelter could use a little boost!!! We need dog, puppy, cat, and kitten food!! We have five drop-off spots, too:
The shelter in Manahawkin, SBR Tire Exchange in Manahawkin, Lucky's Bed and Biscuit in Manahawkin, Uncle Wills Pancake House in Beach Haven, and Wally Mitchells Restaurant in Surf City.
******************************************************
Hi Dog Walkers, If you will, please get the days and times you will be able to walk dogs in the upcoming week to Joanne Eckert no later than Sunday night each week. I need to turn in the schedule to the HD on Monday mornings. Thanks so much for volunteering your time for the animals! It is greatly appreciated!!
**********************************************************
Love our dogs? Then adopt one as a Shelter Pup and FRIENDS will get a portion of the sale! Shelter Pups has turned a select group of dogs from our shelter into amazing and realistic plush pups. Check out Casper and wonderful Sherman! It's a great way to “adopt” one of our dogs and help our volunteer FRIENDS group at the same time. Shelter Pups can also make customs of your very own dog. Check it out and bring one of our dogs home as a Shelter Pup!
