From Connie:

We would love to Thank Margie and Tom Stewart of UNCLE WILLS PANCAKE HOUSE in Beach Haven for hosting FLAVOR UNLEASHED 2 for us last night!!! What a great time everyone had!!! We had some great prizes on our silent auction, the food was FABULOUS!!!! as well as the company!!! It went so well that we will be holding another one in SEPTEMBER!!!!! Keep your eye on our page and don't miss the next one on Thursday, September 12!!!! Thanks for all you support in caring for the shelter animals in need!!!

Thursday's News, Hot off the Presses, from Dave:

Whew, a hot one indeed. Leslie, Kathy R., and I rotated every dog out and back in, so no heat-related issues would occur. Felix had some time out and then meet and greet after Diesel, St Bernard, successfully warmed up the room for him.

Lineup today, skipping 2 and 3, because they get most direct sun:  4-Tank 5-Danni 6-Felix 7-Bronco .

Little Bo PEEP!, the small Yorkie/Shih Tzu mix, got a bath from me!!  He had a little poop stuck on his rear quarters, so when I thought 'somebody's gotta do it," Or, more accurately, "un-DOO it, ahh, whatever, the job fell to me. And Bo has totally wrecked my  "big-dog lover" reputation!!! How can something that small take up half the morning? Well, he tolerated the bath great, and I had him in one hand and the blow dryer in the other, and POOF!! The little skinny mouse fluffed right back up again, nicey nice!! Bo has some matted spots, and we got them snipped out as well.

Bo, before his bath
After

Dori, B side, black, tall, lean Terrier mix, almost like Scottish terrier face, got a bath also, in run#5 by Kathy. Said she is a nice dog.

B side, #15, an orange and white creamsicle of an American Bulldog, Bubba, a charmer, has owner, walks great, big oversized personality to go with that big oversized head!! Just love the moo-cow coloring and pattern.

The Rotti pup, Diesel, a lovedoodle, nice young fella, another great dog, shiny black, is a lap-pouncer, indeed. Loves to snuggle up his walker!

Next to him, B side, is an older Rotti mix that Kathy reports is terrific too.

Leo, brindle and white pit/boxer mix, is a good size, strong, but a pretty good dog as well. He may turn you off, being a lil loud when you walk by, but he wants to go, and he's young too, a pretty, strong, large boy.

Teddy, the tan small mix, didn't have shots as of this morning; just check.

Oh, and Bo: I clipped a red/black yuppypuppy harness and leash on his run, When you take him out and he gets the breeze in his face, he's all "HEY!! Loook at me!! I'm out here with the big boys!!" He's a ridiculously cute boy. Likes Mantis as well, good pair to walk together.

And Bronco likes Bo, too. Bronco likes a lot of dogs, so I'm not sure if there is one particular one he doesn't.  Doesn't seem to have any interest on the way out or in past the runs so, I don't know .
Bronco

Nice turnout at Uncle Wills last nite, good time as usual, good food. I saw Karen, but drew a blank at her name, but said, "I know you, You got Duke!"  Word is  come September, we'll have another event there again. Nice gesture by Kathy G who won the 50/50 and donated the whole pot!!! Way to go,Kathy!!! I would've used the money to buy that dog box away from the winner!! I had my eyes on that, but no luck.

And Kathy R, sitting with me, my wife, and daughter, Paige, says, " Oh, no dessert for me".  WHAAAAAT?  I told her in no uncertain terms, you order that cheesecake, and we'll take care of the rest. No dessert??? What the hay now?? I figure I can walk off some of it today anyway!! haha  Dave

Dog Walking Schedule:

The minimum number of walkers needed by 9:00 a.m. is two in order to handle the task of getting dogs out for their first morning walk.

Volunteers are really needed early in the morning, 9:00 a.m. every day!  Even if   you can only help for a half hour or an hour, it would help.
The dogs are color coded.  New volunteers may NOT walk Red dogs.  Please pay attention to the color coding and the cage cards.  Red walkers' names in red type.
***************************
Important:  Please do not sign up for a shift if you aren't sure you can make it!  Other volunteers come in if there isn't enough coverage.  Some people have signed up for shifts and have been either late or not shown up at all.  We really need at least two people early in the morning--9:00--to get everyone out.

*Please try to notify me of your walking plans by Sunday night each week.
If you don't know your availability a week in advance and see we need help the next day, just send me an e-mail by 10 p.m. the night before, and I will put you on the schedule and notify the shelter.

Maximum number of walkers in the morning is 6 at one time, 4 in the afternoon.
Please make sure no dogs are left outside or in the meet-and-greet room when the last volunteer leaves.

REMINDER:  Every Tuesday is surgery day.  Find out who is having surgery when you come to walk the dogs.

**KITTEN FOSTERS NEEDED ASAP**

We are in need of fosters for our Bottle Baby kittens!

It's that time of the year again.  We need willing fosters who
can handle a litter of bottle babies, which require round-the-clock feeding. Yes, this means night time as well! We supply all the necessities, including a cage. Compensation will be given for your loving time and devotion.

We also need regular kitten fosters, as well, for a maximum of three kittens. Please contact Susan at pink49puffer@inbox.com if you would like to help us during this time! Thank you so much!

KITTEN FOSTERS NEEDED

If interested in helping out, please contact the shelter at socaf@ochd.org.
From Susan:

To all volunteers who wish to socialize with the cats when I am not there, PLEASE take only one cat out at a time.  Cats that should not be taken out have an X with a circle around the X.  These cats need time to adjust to the shelter.
Thank You, Susan

An important message from Lisa:

Harness Lead has donated 10 MED/LARGE RED LEADS and 10 SMALL BLUE LEADS to the shelter doggies!
There have been a lot of photos in the Shelter News of the Harness Lead  being used INCORRECTLY on the dog.
THE BLACK STOPS AND THE RUBBER DISC HAVE A SPECIFIC PURPOSE. If you are not using the black stops and rubber disc as directed, you are possibly hurting the dog!
It is VERY SIMPLE. But MUST be used in the correct way to PREVENT BINDING the dog in a VERY UNCOMFORTABLE way.
PLEASE take a moment to watch this video to understand how to use HL correctly.
Also, there are instruction tags hanging inside and outside of volunteer locker, where the Harness Leads are being kept. PLEASE take a moment to read them.
PLEASE USE CORRECTLY> EXTREMELY IMPORTANT!

Our Food Pantry at the shelter could use a little boost!!!  We need dog, puppy, cat, and kitten food!!  We have five drop-off spots, too:

The shelter in Manahawkin, SBR Tire Exchange in Manahawkin, Lucky's Bed and Biscuit in Manahawkin, Uncle Wills Pancake House in Beach Haven, and Wally Mitchells Restaurant in Surf City.

Hi Dog Walkers, If you will, please get the days and times you will be able to walk dogs in the upcoming week to Joanne Eckert no later than Sunday night each week.  I need to turn in the schedule to the HD on Monday mornings.  Thanks so much for volunteering your time for the animals! It is greatly appreciated!!

**********************************************************
Love our dogs? Then adopt one as a Shelter Pup and FRIENDS will get a portion of the sale! Shelter Pups has turned a select group of dogs from our shelter into amazing and realistic plush pups. ************************************
Anyone who needs a T-shirt, please e-mail Debbie at nyrfan12@aol.com. Send her the size you need,  and she'll leave it in the locker room with your name attached.
***************************************************
All new walkers may walk green dogs on their own once they have gone  through orientation. New walkers may walk yellow dogs once they have  been with a red walker and told by the red walker they are okay to move on.
***********EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY***********
All volunteers must wear either their ID badge or a volunteer T-shirt.
************************************************
Green walkers, please look for volunteers with the red dot on their badge.  They will help you with anything you need.
****************************************************************
From SOCAF Management:
All dogs need to be walked with two leashes at all times, whether they are being walked from the pen to their runs, or just a few feet.  No excuses, please!

The dogs must be on county property at all times when being walked.  They cannot be walked IN the street or across the street.

Smoking is not allowed while walking dogs.

When walking dogs, please do not allow dogs to jump up onto any vehicles.
**********************************************************
TO ALL VOLUNTEERS:
If you see a dog limping, notice a lump, blood in the stool, etc., anything out of the ordinary, or if there is an incident with the dog, be sure to notify the supervisors, document the incident, and put it into the dog's file, keeping a copy for yourself.
