Laila was rescued by New Jersey Boxer Rescue today!

Walking help needed Tuesday morning and many afternoons.
********************************
To our new walkers who may not know how to begin, just hit Reply on this email or send a new one to me at jeckert30@comcast.net and tell me when you would like to start.
**********************************
Dog Walking Schedule:

Volunteers are really needed early in the morning, 9:00 a.m. every day!  Even if you can only help for a half hour or an hour, it would help.
**Reactive dogs?  Give them a ball or toy to carry as you take them out.****
The dogs are color coded.  New volunteers may NOT walk Red dogs.  Please pay attention to the color coding and the cage cards.  Red walkers' names in red type.
***************************
Important:  Please do not sign up for a shift if you aren't sure you can make it!  Other volunteers come in if there isn't enough coverage.  Some people have signed up for shifts and have been either late or not shown up at all.  We really need at least two people early in the morning--9:00--to get everyone out.
*Please try to notify me of your walking plans by Sunday night each week, if possible. You may also call, e-mail, or text me at 709-4140 by 8:30 a.m. on the day you wish to come in. I will then put you on the schedule and notify the shelter.  You may come in as long as there aren't already the maximum number of walkers on that particular day or shift.
Maximum number of walkers in the morning is 6 at one time, 4 in the afternoon.
Please make sure no dogs are left outside or in the met-and-greet room when the last volunteer leaves.
PLEASE do not block the mailbox when you come in to walk dogs! Leave enough space for the mail truck to pull in and out.
Red walkers are underscored.

From Eric at Pack Ethic Rescue:
Buster has a darkness in his eye. Like ink bled out into the bottom of his round hazel orb in his left eye, there is a stain. In our first days together, it caught my eye again and again. I imagined the face of a human prize fighter after leaving the ring with a bloodshot eye from being hit too hard. It is fitting, considering the breed, but this young buck did not arrive with any scars from fighting. Buster fits the mold and story for a PitBull that came from such a breeder, but he looks more like he was just born into neglect and ended up as a stray. Buster wasn't fought, just forgotten. He is young and small, skinny and overstimulated, cagey and frustrated, clueless to the outside world. Buster sniffs every blade of grass as if he has never seen such splendor. His nose hits the ground like a scent hound and he follows each path of activity with determination, his tail high and ticking like a metronome, back and forth as he zig zags through the yard. Buster notices birds perched on the fence and runs to them, jumping up as if to say, 'Join me! Play!'. Buster sees a fluffy white tuft of cottony pollen floating through the air and his eyes follow it in wonder causing him to leap high into the air after it as it blows up and out of his reach. Buster thinks that rocks and bark, sticks and even the prickly purple flower of a thistle plant is a Toy! Eventually he finds the actual toys and every ball gets equal attention, as he finds the most fun that can be had with each. He carries each one inside one at a time because he cannot bear to part with it. Buster was born into a careless at best, abusive at worst world. There was no place for him and he ended up as a stray and then a shelter dog within a year of being alive. Now Buster enters a new world where there is possibility and promise. But Buster has no idea how to act or what to do. Finally allowed to be free as a pet dog, Buster is reactive and not housebroken, hyper and frustrated, clueless as to how he fits into this human world. Buster wasn't brought into our world but rather forced out into a cruel version of our world and left to his own survival. Now we want him to be a trusting, respectful and loving pet and Buster is making all of the wrong decisions. So, breath is drawn deep, patience is mustered, boundaries are set and the work begins. There is no speedy transition for Buster. We cannot let him run wild and spew everyday the never ending reboot of some toxic flashback of his sordid history and never reach the balance we want for him. The rewards have to come with guidance, the affection with commands and our soft hearts inside breaking for what people can do to a beautiful innocent creature of nature have to be strong for Buster and not allow his mistakes to define his worth in this world. It is not Buster's fault he ended up this way. That darkness in his eye does not mean to seem menacing. Everyday, Buster learns and follows. Everyday Buster finds comfort in structure and rewards everywhere he looks. This new life is winning him over. Buster has a lighter darkness in his eyes.

Please help by printing and hanging this flyer to help advertise our Shelter and wonderful pets for adoption. Simply pin on a bulletin board at your local library, post office, town hall, laundry mat, etc. or ask a store owner, restaurant,  if you can hang in their window or wall.   More exposure means more adoptions. Pass on to a friend to place one somewhere as well, the more the better!

If you’d like to make it two-sided for hanging in a window,  print two, place back to back and tape together in the middle.
Also, it’s not necessary, but if you’d like to laminate a flyer they have laminate pouches at Staples and Office Max.
Thank you for getting the word out for our pets waiting for their forever home.

We have a new "Special Project" classification as the weather warms up and the dogs are put outside in the runs. Volunteers would sign in as usual and be on the schedule, but they would not walk dogs. Their only duty is to sit outside when the dogs are in the runs and keep an eye on them so others are free to walk, mornings only when the public isn't around.  This change is perfect for experienced volunteers who don't feel comfortable walking the tough guys on any particular day.

Email me if you would be interested in sitting in the sun with the dogs.

************************************************************

Please don't leave big, strong dogs unsupervised in Run #1, as a strong dog might be able to break out.

****************************************************************Our Pet Food Pantry is currently located at the Ocean Community Church (72W) on Wednesday mornings between 10 am and 12 noon.  The Church volunteers are thrilled to have dog and cat food to distribute.  Please pass around to friends and family that we need ongoing pet food donations (smaller bags, if possible, would be helpful). Please drop any food at the Shelter.  If you have any questions, please call Claire at 609-549-5243.
