Afternoon Red help needed

************************************************
Dog Walking Schedule:

The minimum number of walkers needed by 9:00 a.m. is two in order to handle the task of getting dogs out for their first morning walk.

Volunteers are really needed early in the morning, 9:00 a.m. every day!  Even if you can only help for a half hour or an hour, it would help.
The dogs are color coded.  New volunteers may NOT walk Red dogs.  Please pay attention to the color coding and the cage cards.  Red walkers' names in red type.
***************************
Important:  Please do not sign up for a shift if you aren't sure you can make it!  Other volunteers come in if there isn't enough coverage.  Some people have signed up for shifts and have been either late or not shown up at all.  We really need at least two people early in the morning--9:00--to get everyone out.
*Please try to notify me of your walking plans by Sunday night each week, if possible. You may also call, e-mail, or text me at 709-4140 by 8:30 a.m. on the day you wish to come in. I will then put you on the schedule and notify the shelter.  You may come in as long as there aren't already the maximum number of walkers on that particular day or shift.
Maximum number of walkers in the morning is 6 at one time, 4 in the afternoon.
Please make sure no dogs are left outside or in the meet-and-greet room when the last volunteer leaves.
REMINDER:  Every Tuesday is surgery day.  Find out who is having surgery when you come to walk the dogs.
New Red Walker Policy:  New red walkers must be accompanied by another red walker for a period of several weeks.  New red walkers have a double asterisk by their names.

From Anne:

We are beginning a new year 2015 and as a reminder, I am in the process of collecting annual membership dues of $10 from all Friend's volunteers  (fosters included) at the shelter, Petsmart and Petvalu.  Anytime between now and at our annual meeting in April (more to come later) you can leave the money in the "blue pouch" with the shelter staff or at Petsmart.  Please include with the fee your name, email and phone number.  We have already made a big difference in the lives of cats and dogs and I hope this year we can do even more with your help.  Thank you, Anne Nowosad (Treasurer)

*************************************************
One year ago I started my Friends adventure.
It took a while to get to this point. I picked-up the app in October but after reading the front page stating that the shelter is a kill shelter I couldn't bring myself to go volunteer (if I knew then what I knew now, it would have been a different story). Nevertheless after losing my kitty Honey on the 4th of February and not having a job, I knew I had to go do something useful and if I could give love to a furbaby before being pts then that would be a plus.
When I went into the m&g room I saw a sweet looking pup hanging on a doggie bed. I recall thinking "that can't be a pit bull, she looks so calm, friendly, and sweet, nothing like I've always be told and saw" and the pup paid no real attention to us. I wanted to pet her so bad but didn't know if we were allowed so I didn't. Plus the possibility of it being a pit bull...
Casey introduced herself and the pup in question. It was Chocolate and yes she is a pit bull. Right then and there that changed my attitude towards the breed.
On the 21st, I walked for the first time. It was another pittie, Nana. She went from no energy to almost walking me. I learned then and there that even though Casey warned us it wouldn't be a "walk in the park" with most of these pups, Nana took me to school and taught me a valuable lesson.
.
I've been getting dragged around and falling in love ever since. And of course finding our puppy love Penny and all of you was an unexpected and wonderful bonus!
So this is a big thank you for all that the volunteers do and the patience many have had with me over the last year!

Update on Patrick-
Patrick's surgery went very well.  Patrick's affectionate disposition at the hospital left a smile on the staff's faces that will not  be easily forgotten as well as our deep gratitude to the generous and caring donors that made it all possible.  Thank you all.  FRIENDS OF SOCAS

Please don't leave big, strong dogs unsupervised in Run #1, as a strong dog might be able to break out.

******************************************************

Our Pet Food Pantry is currently located at the Ocean Community Church (72W) on Wednesday mornings between 10 am and 12 noon.  The Church volunteers are thrilled to have dog and cat food to distribute.  Please pass around to friends and family that we need ongoing pet food donations (smaller bags, if possible, would be helpful). Please drop any food at the Shelter.  If you have any questions, please call Claire at 609-549-5243.
