There were no adoptions today, but please look over the walking schedule!
**************************************************************
The shelter is FULL! If you know of anyone who is even thinking of adopting, now is the time!
Volunteers are needed to walk all of these dogs. Please help! One or two people per shift just isn't nearly enough when we have so many dogs, and afternoon walkers are desperately needed.

From Joan:
My connection with a shelter dog:
I enter the hallway in the shelter, kennel after kennel spread before me. I pause at each door; faces look up, paws dancing, each hoping to be chosen. I stop in front of kennel 8 and watch the excitement as a dog twirls and barks, ears flapping…..Take ME!!
I offer some treats through the door, and we make the connection. I ask for a sit, she obliges, tail swishing across the floor, the joy so bright in her eyes as I attach the leash. Our personal adventure begins.
We walk along the path where she lifts her nose to smell fragrances I am not even aware of, her ears twitching at every little noise. Our walk includes some training to keep her mind exercised as well as her body. Such a smart girl, she gives a sit, a touch, and waits until I release her with FREE!
We find a shady spot in the grass, where she lays down and rolls on her back, asking for belly rubs. I oblige, she relaxes, we enjoy the peaceful bond of human and dog. She turns over, gently places her head on my lap. I love the closeness, I can feel her warm breath on my legs. I scratch behind her ears, reward her with some special treats, and listen to her breathing, slow and calm. I share a peaceful, happy moment with this dog.
After our rest we make the walk back to the kennels. I tell her how special she is, that I love her and will be back another day for a walk. We reach her kennel and I toss in a few treats as she enters. I remove the leash and close the door. Her nose reaches for my hand. I promise her there are more wonderful days and love to come. She turns, goes through the doggie door, and I hear the lapping of water.
Volunteers experience these moments of exquisite pleasure with shelter dogs. Every day another dog warps itself around our hearts, gives us pleasure without even knowing it.
We are living fortunate, learning patience, empathy and love, freely given from shelter dogs.

Our Pet Food Pantry is currently located at the Ocean Community Church (72W) on Wednesday mornings between 10 am and 12 noon. The Church volunteers are thrilled to have dog and cat food to distribute. Please pass around to friends and family that we need ongoing pet food donations (smaller bags, if possible, would be helpful). Please drop any food at the Shelter. If you have any questions, please call Claire at 609-549-5243.

Here's an easy way for anyone who walks to make a little money for our shelter, and it's free for anyone who has a smartphone.

Why share with your friends? -
When they shop, they'll help Friends of Southern Ocean County Animal Shelter or their own favorite cause. Why not let them take advantage of over 1,400 stores that want to help?
The average shopper is raising over $30 - $100 a year for their cause ... all for free.
It's simple and automatic..
Five bucks free, just for trying us out.
The more iGive members, the better the deals we can get from stores.
Spread your iGive link everywhere (Facebook's a great way, but Twitter, e-mail, blogs, bulletin boards, and handouts all work).

Dog Walking Schedule:
The minimum number of walkers needed by 9:00 a.m. is two in order to handle the task of getting dogs out for their first morning walk.
Volunteers are really needed early in the morning, 9:00 a.m. every day! Even if you can only help for a half hour or an hour, it would help.
The dogs are color coded. New volunteers may NOT walk Red dogs. Please pay attention to the color coding and the cage cards. Red walkers' names in red type.
***************************
Important: Please do not sign up for a shift if you aren't sure you can make it! Other volunteers come in if there isn't enough coverage. Some people have signed up for shifts and have been either late or not shown up at all. We really need at least two people early in the morning--9:00--to get everyone out.
*Please try to notify me of your walking plans by Sunday night each week, if possible. You may also call, e-mail, or text me at 709-4140 by 8:30 a.m. on the day you wish to come in. I will then put you on the schedule and notify the shelter. You may come in as long as there aren't already the maximum number of walkers on that particular day or shift.
Maximum number of walkers in the morning is 6 at one time, 4 in the afternoon.
Please make sure no dogs are left outside or in the meet-and-greet room when the last volunteer leaves.
REMINDER: Every Tuesday is surgery day. Find out who is having surgery when you come to walk the dogs.
New Red Walker Policy: New red walkers must be accompanied by another red walker for a period of several weeks. New red walkers have a double asterisk by their names.

KITTEN FOSTERS NEEDED
If interested in helping out, please contact the shelter at socaf@ochd.org.
From Susan:
To all volunteers who wish to socialize with the cats when I am not there, PLEASE take only one cat out at a time. Cats that should not be taken out have an X with a circle around the X. These cats need time to adjust to the shelter.
Thank You, Susan

PLEASE take a moment to watch this video to understand how to use HL correctly.
Our Food Pantry at the shelter could use a little boost!!! We need dog, puppy, cat, and kitten food!! We have five drop-off spots, too:
The shelter in Manahawkin, SBR Tire Exchange in Manahawkin, Lucky's Bed and Biscuit in Manahawkin, Uncle Wills Pancake House in Beach Haven, and Wally Mitchells Restaurant in Surf City.
******************************************************
Hi Dog Walkers, If you will, please get the days and times you will be able to walk dogs in the upcoming week to Joanne Eckert no later than Sunday night each week. I need to turn in the schedule to the HD on Monday mornings. Thanks so much for volunteering your time for the animals! It is greatly appreciated!!
**********************************************************
Love our dogs? Then adopt one as a Shelter Pup and FRIENDS will get a portion of the sale! Shelter Pups has turned a select group of dogs from our shelter into amazing and realistic plush pups. Check out Casper and wonderful Sherman! It's a great way to “adopt” one of our dogs and help our volunteer FRIENDS group at the same time. Shelter Pups can also make customs of your very own dog. Check it out and bring one of our dogs home as a Shelter Pup!
