We're gearing up for another bake sale at Petsmart!  Peggy had one this past weekend and raised $505 for the Friends.  The next bake sale will be held on May 24 from 11-3, Memorial Day Weekend.

This sale will be called Colossal Cookies, as they seem to sell best.  Each packet of several cookies should be attractively wrapped with a bow or ribbon, if possible.

As always, table sitters and bakers are needed!  Please let me know if you can help and which you would like to do, sit at the table or bake.

Our Pet Food Pantry is cur
rently located at the Ocean Community Church (72W) on Wednesday mornings between 10 am and 12 noon.  The Church volunteers are thrilled to have dog and cat food to distribute.  Please pass around to friends and family that we need ongoing pet food donations (smaller bags, if possible, would be helpful). Please drop any food at the Shelter.  If you have any questions, please call Claire at 609-549-5243.

Coming up in June!

Why share with your friends? -

When they shop, they'll help Friends of Southern Ocean County Animal Shelter or their own favorite cause.  Why not let them take advantage of over 1,400 stores that want to help?
The average shopper is raising over $30 - $100 a year for their cause ... all for free.
It's simple and automatic..
Five bucks free, just for trying us out.
The more iGive members, the better the deals we can get from stores.
Spread your iGive link everywhere (Facebook's a great way, but Twitter, e-mail, blogs, bulletin boards, and handouts all work).

Dog Walking Schedule:
The minimum number of walkers needed by 9:00 a.m. is two in order to handle the task of getting dogs out for their first morning walk.

Volunteers are really needed early in the morning, 9:00 a.m. every day!  Even if   you can only help for a half hour or an hour, it would help.
The dogs are color coded.  New volunteers may NOT walk Red dogs.  Please pay attention to the color coding and the cage cards.  Red walkers' names in red type.
***************************
Important:  Please do not sign up for a shift if you aren't sure you can make it!  Other volunteers come in if there isn't enough coverage.  Some people have signed up for shifts and have been either late or not shown up at all.  We really need at least two people early in the morning--9:00--to get everyone out.
*Please try to notify me of your walking plans by Sunday night each week, if possible. You may also call, e-mail, or text me at 709-4140 by 8:30 a.m. on the day you wish to come in. I will then put you on the schedule and notify the shelter.  You may come in as long as there aren't already the maximum number of walkers on that particular day or shift.
Maximum number of walkers in the morning is 6 at one time, 4 in the afternoon.
Please make sure no dogs are left outside or in the meet-and-greet room when the last volunteer leaves.
REMINDER:  Every Tuesday is surgery day.  Find out who is having surgery when you come to walk the dogs.
New Red Walker Policy:  New red walkers must be accompanied by another red walker for a period of several weeks.  New red walkers have a double asterisk by their names.

KITTEN FOSTERS NEEDED

If interested in helping out, please contact the shelter at socaf@ochd.org.
From Susan:

To all volunteers who wish to socialize with the cats when I am not there, PLEASE take only one cat out at a time.  Cats that should not be taken out have an X with a circle around the X.  These cats need time to adjust to the shelter.
Thank You, Susan

Hi Dog Walkers, If you will, please get the days and times you will be able to walk dogs in the upcoming week to Joanne Eckert no later than Sunday night each week.  I need to turn in the schedule to the HD on Monday mornings.  Thanks so much for volunteering your time for the animals! It is greatly appreciated!!

Love our dogs? Then adopt one as a Shelter Pup and FRIENDS will get a portion of the sale! Shelter Pups has turned a select group of dogs from our shelter into amazing and realistic plush pups. Check out Casper and wonderful Sherman! It's a great way to “adopt” one of our dogs and help our volunteer FRIENDS group at the same time. Shelter Pups can also make customs of your very own dog. Check it out and bring one of our dogs home as a Shelter Pup!

From SOCAF Management:
All dogs need to be walked with two leashes at all times, whether they are being walked from the pen to their runs, or just a few feet.  No excuses, please!

The dogs must be on county property at all times when being walked.  They cannot be walked IN the street or across the street.

Smoking is not allowed while walking dogs.

When walking dogs, please do not allow dogs to jump up onto any vehicles.
**********************************************************
TO ALL VOLUNTEERS:
If you see a dog limping, notice a lump, blood in the stool, etc., anything out of the ordinary, or if there is an incident with the dog, be sure to notify the supervisors, document the incident, and put it into the dog's file, keeping a copy for yourself.
