LITTLE MOLLY NEEDS OUR HELP!!
PAY IT FORWARD; HELP MOLLY.

Molly is a 12-year-old Bichon; Molly’s mommy is Fran Stietzel, a longtime supporter and retired volunteer of the Friends. In the many years Fran has worked at the shelter, she has bathed, groomed, cooked, and run many fundraisers for our dogs. Fran adopted two hospice dogs that would have been put to sleep, if not for her intervention. Hope was our first hospice dog, a 17-year-old poodle, blind and deaf with congestive heart failure. With a great deal of love and care from Fran, Hope lived two more years and died at age 19. Two weeks after Hope passed, on Fran took home another hospice dog, Paco. Paco was 16. He has congestive heart failure and has no teeth and Cushing’s disease. Paco’s entire body was covered with open sores and was severely neglected and abused. Paco is thriving with love and much care and has turned 16 years old and has been with Fran for 16 months now.

Fran and Molly need our help now. Molly took a nasty fall that dislocated her front leg. Unfortunately the vet did not take an x-ray as needed, which caused the leg to heal with a deformity. Little Molly also has a torn ACL that also went undiagnosed. One option was to have her leg amputated. Molly was taken to Garden State Animal Hospital. They operated and were able to save the leg. It will be a long recovery and then she will need another surgery to repair her back leg. Total cost will be around $8,000.

Please help us give back to a woman who has saved the lives of so many animals and who needs our help now.

Sunny Saturday News from Dave:

What a terrific day to get in and get going, a nice spring day finally, no last minute ice encrusted windshields, etc. to deal with either. Good
People/Pup ratio too, of 1:1, or 2:4 (2 legs to four paws ). Either way, it enabled a lotta walking time for all, and a neat little pack walk of the most unusual or diverse group of dogs, from little Yorkie/Cairn terrier mix, Stelllla, to the not so Grizzly "Bear", with Anderson and Harper in between.  Along with the easy squeezy Patches, made for an entirely much too easy day of walking and outdoor pen time. I basically had Patches to myself for two hours as Kathy grabbed Harper, Casey leashed up Anderson and John grabbed the Bear. Then rotated in the little guy and off we went again.

Harper is a cute gal, she is really coming along, and walking with this crew has given her the confidence to let her impishness come out. A scared dog when she got here, she is now a just a nice get along, learning how to play, nice walker too.

Patches is putting on some much needed weight also, and just craves his one-on-one attention, so if you're done walking, spend time with the handsome lad in his pen; he just loves a nice long ear rub.

I'm guessing the overhead canopies will be installed soon, and if the work-order on the outside hose bib gets taken care of, were set.

If anyone is replacing or has an old steel-toothed rake they can spare, bring it in, put it on side of bldg., near runs 4 and 5, and we can neaten up the outdoor pens pea gravel a bit, rake out some back gravel to cover the front bare spots.

And a huge thanks to Joanna and the transport crew for tipping over the shelter and shaking some dogs out the door!!  Had to even attach a CABOOSE to the main car with the load that left here !! EGGs-cellent work!! (Get it ? cause Easter? , eggs?? good one, right ?)

Enjoy your Easter !    Dave

Our Pet Food Pantry is currently located at the Ocean Community Church (72W) on Wednesday mornings between 10 am and 12 noon.  The Church volunteers are thrilled to have dog and cat food to distribute.  Please pass around to friends and family that we need ongoing pet food donations (smaller bags, if possible, would be helpful). Please drop any food at the Shelter.  If you have any questions, please call Claire at 609-549-5243.

April $5 Challenge - 1,000 New iGive Members a Day Mean $5 Donations for Friends of Southern Ocean County Animal Shelter

Spring is finally here. To celebrate, we'll donate $5 per new member supporting Friends of Southern Ocean County Animal Shelter in the month of April.  No purchase necessary.  In other words, for free.  If a new member supports a different group, we'll donate $5 to that group.

Here's the challenge.  iGive must get at least 1,000 new members a day (supporting any cause, it doesn't need to be yours) in April. They need to try the free and optional iGive Button through 7/15/14.

In our best months, we'll get 1,000 to 1,500 people joining each day.  What we're hoping is that you'll tell all of your friends, even those friends who might support causes or charities different from your favorite. That'll make April a Best Month.

Why share with your friends? -

When they shop, they'll help Friends of Southern Ocean County Animal Shelter or their own favorite cause.  Why not let them take advantage of over 1,400 stores that want to help?
The average shopper is raising over $30 - $100 a year for their cause ... all for free.
It's simple and automatic..
Five bucks free, just for trying us out.
The more iGive members, the better the deals we can get from stores.
Spread your iGive link everywhere (Facebook's a great way, but Twitter, e-mail, blogs, bulletin boards, and handouts all work).

Dog Walking Schedule:
The minimum number of walkers needed by 9:00 a.m. is two in order to handle the task of getting dogs out for their first morning walk.

Volunteers are really needed early in the morning, 9:00 a.m. every day!  Even if   you can only help for a half hour or an hour, it would help.
The dogs are color coded.  New volunteers may NOT walk Red dogs.  Please pay attention to the color coding and the cage cards.  Red walkers' names in red type.
***************************
Important:  Please do not sign up for a shift if you aren't sure you can make it!  Other volunteers come in if there isn't enough coverage.  Some people have signed up for shifts and have been either late or not shown up at all.  We really need at least two people early in the morning--9:00--to get everyone out.
*Please try to notify me of your walking plans by Sunday night each week, if possible. You may also call, e-mail, or text me at 709-4140 by 8:30 a.m. on the day you wish to come in. I will then put you on the schedule and notify the shelter.  You may come in as long as there aren't already the maximum number of walkers on that particular day or shift.
Maximum number of walkers in the morning is 6 at one time, 4 in the afternoon.
Please make sure no dogs are left outside or in the meet-and-greet room when the last volunteer leaves.
REMINDER:  Every Tuesday is surgery day.  Find out who is having surgery when you come to walk the dogs.
New Red Walker Policy:  New red walkers must be accompanied by another red walker for a period of several weeks.  New red walkers have a double asterisk by their names.

KITTEN FOSTERS NEEDED

If interested in helping out, please contact the shelter at socaf@ochd.org.
From Susan:

To all volunteers who wish to socialize with the cats when I am not there, PLEASE take only one cat out at a time.  Cats that should not be taken out have an X with a circle around the X.  These cats need time to adjust to the shelter.
Thank You, Susan

Hi Dog Walkers, If you will, please get the days and times you will be able to walk dogs in the upcoming week to Joanne Eckert no later than Sunday night each week.  I need to turn in the schedule to the HD on Monday mornings.  Thanks so much for volunteering your time for the animals! It is greatly appreciated!!

Love our dogs? Then adopt one as a Shelter Pup and FRIENDS will get a portion of the sale! Shelter Pups has turned a select group of dogs from our shelter into amazing and realistic plush pups. Check out Casper and wonderful Sherman! It's a great way to “adopt” one of our dogs and help our volunteer FRIENDS group at the same time. Shelter Pups can also make customs of your very own dog.
