Thursday's News, from Dave:

Well, what a decent day to jump back into it ! (Well, maybe not 'jump', but ease into it). Didn't rain, some breezes to enjoy, and looks like the "Going Home Bus" stopped here late yesterday afternoon. Where'd everybody go???   Got a lot done and hardly had to even touch a dog!!! Except Jameson, who I have really missed, that lovely doll of a dawg, got to have some squeaky time with him. Asked Caroline to get me a squeaky toy for him, and while laying on his back, getting a nice bellyrub, sprung into action when he heard the squeaky toy around the corner!! He's an amusing fellow, loves the noisy toys.

Got a bunch of leashes and small harnesses out and hung up. Gee whiz? When do we have the troops screaming for SMALL harnesses?? ok,ok they are there for the walking. Poop bags reloaded, garbage emptied and relined with a new bag, some kennel work in and out, and thanks to the number of good volunteer walkers, I didn't even have to harness up and walk a woof. My back's better, just one of those things, a lower strain. Walking, swimming is fine; tying your shoes is another, but as the doctor says, "At your age, things take a bit longer to heal." HEY!!!! Whats that mean??? "Your age???" gee whiz!!!!

Welcome to the wonderful world of woof walking, Robert and Janice.

There are small Yuppy Puppy harnesses hanging up, and in the locker room with some leashes, in the tool bag, if you get caught short.

Coleen, would you make up new name tags for  Robert, and Janice, and post them on the locker room wall? thanks in advance.

Was at a  Labor Day bbq, and there were dogs all over there!!  It was great.  A 4month pit puppy, black with white feet and tail tip--you know THAT look!! Beauty!! Well behaved too. and the homeowners 3, and a rescued Aussie Terrier who was in the pool all night! And, a gorgeous pit/husky/who knows, mostly white, lotta tan, some black, black snout like Bruno, a year old. I'm not naming names, but glad I get to see them all pretty regularly. Even my wife was over the top with how good and all the whole crew was. And happily, the humans were very well behaved as well--good responsible, people who socialized the heck outta their dogs. It was nice night, all getting along. It was good to see people positively loving the big and little pitties that we all love to be around. And, of course, I was CAUGHT biting all the puppers FOLDIES !!!! How do you NOT???? See ya,  Dave

From Linda Bonvie, who happened to be at the shelter for kitty pics, Anna's going home pic:

Phinn the poster dog:

Update Anna, from Coleen:

Anna/Emma, who is now Jenny, seems to be blending right in so far. She is such a sweet, sweet girl!  She slept all night on her back with her feet in the air (and she snores), she was great on the morning's "pack walk," and then decided her favorite seat in the house is my work chair that I have to either fight her for or share with her.

It is greatly appreciated!!

From SOCAF Management:

All dogs need to be walked with two leashes at all times, whether they are being walked from the pen to their runs, or just a few feet.  No excuses, please!

The dogs must be on county property at all times when being walked.  They cannot be walked IN the street or across the street.

Smoking is not allowed while walking dogs.

NEW:  When walking dogs, please do not allow dogs to jump up onto any vehicles.

**********************************************************
TO ALL VOLUNTEERS:

If you see a dog limping, notice a lump, blood in the stool, etc., anything out of the ordinary, or if there is an incident with the dog, be sure to notify the supervisors, document the incident, and put it into the dog's file, keeping a copy for yourself.
********************************************************

Dog Walking Schedule:

Please check the dog-walking schedule below.
There are many days and time slots with little or no coverage.
Please e-mail me with the days and times you are able to cover.
If no one can cover, the dogs will either not get out in the morning or have to go back inside early on those days.
The minimum number of walkers needed by 9:00 a.m. is two in order to handle the task of getting dogs out for their first morning walk.

Volunteers are really needed early in the morning, 9:00 a.m. every day!  Even if   you can only help for a half hour or an hour, it would help.
The dogs are color coded.  New volunteers may NOT walk Red dogs.  Please pay attention to the color coding and the cage cards.  Red walkers' names in red type.
***************************
Important:  Please do not sign up for a shift if you aren't sure you can make it!  Other volunteers come in if there isn't enough coverage.  Some people have signed up for shifts and have been either late or not shown up at all.  We really need at least two people early in the morning--9:00--to get everyone out.

*Please make sure you notify me of your walking plans by Sunday night each week!
If you don't know your availability a week in advance and see we need help the next day, just send me an e-mail by 10 p.m. the night before, and I will put you on the schedule and notify the shelter.

Maximum number of walkers in the morning is 6 at one time, 4 in the afternoon.

REMINDER:  Every Tuesday is surgery day.  Find out who is having surgery when you come to walk the dogs.

FOSTER HELP NEEDED!!!
From Susan:
We are looking for volunteers to foster cats that need medical attention.  Medicine is usually administered from between 10-14 days.  This is not a very difficult thing to do.  You need a separate room to keep the cat away from your pets.

******************************************************
KITTEN FOSTERS NEEDED

If interested in helping out, please contact the shelter at socaf@ochd.org.
From Susan:

To all volunteers who wish to socialize with the cats when I am not there, PLEASE take only one cat out at a time.  Cats that should not be taken out have an X with a circle around the X.  These cats need time to adjust to the shelter.
Thank You, Susan
