Sunny Sunday's Update from Dave:

Sometimes this world grabs you, fouls up your schedule, gets in the way of what you want to do. Ya gotta deal with nonsense, fix stuff, whatever, gets in the way of us getting down to dogtown, (and cat town!!) But there are times like today where you do get in, and you really wonder......do we do this for THEM, or do we do this for what they do to us and our inner selves. Hmmmm? Bunch of both i think.

So what I'm getting at is a dog named Duke, a beautiful black Lab, that is soooo shy, I had to after a good while of relaxing with him, pick him up and carry him outdoors, where he proceeded to sit and not move. Until Linda C. came around with the beautiful Belle. Sweetheart doesn't come close to really describing her.  Duke got up, and I think he may just be more at ease with dogs than people, and he had a friend, and off we went. Magic. The art of a good dog meeting a great dog, and POOF!!!!  A long way to go, but a heck of a start.  We ended up, lets just say, having a really good morning with a great, handsome bunch of dogs. And to see Duke laying in the cool grass, not a worry, tail wagging, enjoying the company of what were strangers an hour ago, was a potion for us. A real refresher. He knows he's a good boy, but somewhere, somehow, someone tried to wreck him. But Duke, deep down, cannot be ruined; there's too much good dog in him. He came a long way in one Sunday morning.

Speaking of a terrific mix of woofs, Cliff the pup is awfully well behaved for a young pup, and loves his buddies Belle, Babygirl, J.T (gorgeous red Border Collie) who is another dreamboat.  I met Angel today, and found her an extremely cuddly pitty, nice looking brindle  coat.

OHHH MYGOSH!!! Took a look at Sadie the French Bulldog, and wanted to take her and RUN!!!!!!  What a little bumble!!!! And Freddie the Bulldog, looks like him and Max fell off the same Turnip Truck!!! Cute dawgs!!

Linda is fully aware what dog shampoo tastes like.  She gave Belle a nice bath, and she now smells nice as a daisy !!

OHH !! Drew had  that mastiff mix (?) out. He's young and pretty nice, as well as Dempsey, the Boxer, who was enjoying sitting in his pool. He is a "leaner". If you stop, he cuddles you, leans against you. He is a good looking Boxer.

So nice day and work from Stella, John, Linda, Drew and Stevie. See ya  Thursday.

Oh, and use HARNESS with Duke. He is little nervous and balks going back in, and can /will try to back outta martingale. Do give this beaut the love and time; ya can't help it.   Dave

I was at the shelter this morning to witness the transformation of Luke with the help of Dave, Linda, and Belle.  I took many photos, some of which I put into a slideshow to be included with tonight's blog.  However, Google seems to disapprove, at least for now, and will not allow me to upload either the slideshow or any of the several videos of Tilly at Pack Ethic.

I will try again tomorrow.

The shelter is FULL!
Red walkers urgently needed.

Look who Joan Jotz coaxed out of his den/cage!

From Joan:

DUKE IS WALKABLE!!!
I worked with Duke all day building up his trust and confidence. I was not allowed inside the kennel, so I sat outside on the floor and talked to him. I would move the kennel door and the lock so he got used to the sound without being afraid. It only took a short while before he was not reacting to the sound by running away.....good boy!
. By the end of the day he was coming over to me, licking my hand and giving me his paws! He is such a sweet dog, just so frightened. One of the staff also worked with him, and she did get him out of the kennel, but then he froze and went back in. I kept Mel updated during the day, hoping she would take him out and get him his shots. Finally at 3:50 I got her back to Duke. I was able to get a leash on him no problem, and coaxed him out. Had to do a little Tushy pushing, but Mel got Duke to the meet and greet room. Once there he seemed happier and calmer, sniffing everyone and looking around. He likes to be gently pet. I saw Mel give him the needles, so Duke is finally walkable!! Just go slowly and quietly with him, and you may still have to use some Tushy pushes, but he is just the sweetest baby dog!!
THIS MADE MY DAY!!!!!!!

I also worked some more with Bonnie, this time on "leave it". She picked up the command very quickly. Also did more clicker training with the balls and toy. Bonnie is doing very well.

From Jen, Tilly on the road to Pack Ethic:

There are two separate videos of Tilly at Pack Ethic.  Unfortunately, I am not able to upload them to Blogger at this time.  They are on YouTube, and you can see them by clicking on the links below:

From Connie:

Hi Dog Walkers, If you will, please get the days and times you will be able to walk dogs in the upcoming week to Joanne Eckert no later than Sunday night each week.  I need to turn in the schedule to the HD on Monday mornings.  Thanks so much for volunteering your time for the animals! It is greatly appreciated!!

From Dottie:

NEW PROCEDURES

To help the staff accomplish the important things they need to do during the day, the following changes are being made to the volunteer scheduling and program.
As of today, Friday, June 1, our new volunteering hours are as follows:

In the morning the hours for DOG WALKERS are 9-12; staff members will be walking the housebroken dogs at 8:00 a.m.
By 12 o'clock all dogs must be brought in and put in the inside runs so no one is entering or leaving the building during lunch hour.
At 1:00 dogs can be taken back out for walks and to the runs for afternoon fun.
Between the hours of 12:00 and 1:00 no volunteers in the building please.
We ask that as best you can, every Saturday or Sunday you let Joanne Eckert know who will be walking that week and what times. We will be turning a schedule into the supervisors for the week, which will be posted. The number of dogwalkers at any given time is 6 in the morning and 4 in the afternoon. Exceptions include events, meetings and taking pictures.

Please make sure you wear your badge and/or a volunteer t-shirt and . . . please wear the all important proper footwear and attire.
The new mirrors are being installed in the hallways to aid in unexpected meetings of dogs. These will help in seeing who is coming and going.
We hope that everyone will comply with the new adjustments as it helps all of us to help the animals.

Thank you,
Dottie Reynolds

From Martha:

I won’t be reviewing the shelter rules since I’m not a volunteer dog walker and cannot be relied on to get them correct (however I do know that two leashes are required and no smoking while walking dogs – of course!) – what I don’t know are where people are allowed to walk and not allowed to walk (except county property is okay – but don’t know where that is – my guess is that the people who walk dogs do know this and that this is included in the volunteer training on the Thursdays).  I will be covering training – 1. training to improve the dogs’ adoptability, 2. training (and management methods and tools) to help manage the dog (i.e. when getting the dog in and out of the runs and when going through doorways), 3. Some help with leash walking issues (i.e. how to encourage/teach dogs to walk on loose leash),  4. Some training/management that could help with unruly dogs – i.e. dogs that jump up, bite the leash, etc.,  5. a discussion of equipment – i.e. types of leashes and collars (only a discussion – people like what they like – but, some knowledge on equipment pros and cons and safety would not hurt).

****JUNE JAMBOREE****

BAKERS AND TABLE ATTENDENTS ARE NEEDED FOR OUR NEXT FUND RAISING EVENT ON JUNE 23, FROM 1-4!! HOPING THIS IS A BIG EVENT!!!  BAKING WHOLE PIES, CAKES AND PACAGES OF COOKIES AND BROWNIES!! IF YOU CAN HELP SIGN UP AT THE SHELTER OR EMAIL ME AT DEERWIFE55@COMCAST.NET!!!
THANKS FOR ALL YOU DO FOR THE ANIMALS.

***************************************************

All new walkers may walk green dogs on their own once they have gone through orientation. New walkers may walk yellow dogs once they have been with a red walker and told by the red walker they are okay to move on.

***********EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY***********

All volunteers must wear either their ID badge or a volunteer T-shirt.

************************************************
It's mosquito season!  Please be sure to empty the kiddie pools and bring in any blankets or towels left outside before you leave in the afternoon.

Do NOT try to clean Dallas' ears!  She doesn't like having her ears cleaned, so that's best left to the pros.
***********************************************

Green walkers please look for volunteers with the red dot on their badge.  They will help you with anything you need.

From Connie:

It has been asked of us volunteers to not come to the shelter during Rabies clinic. They are always so busy during one of these events, and since we cant walk dogs during this time it would be great if we were just there from 9 to 10:30 and then again after at 1:00. I know I was there one day and saw the madness and well I couldn't get out the door fast enough!!!!   CRAZY BUSY!!!

****************************************************************

From SOCAF Management:

All dogs need to be walked with two leashes at all times, whether they are being walked from the pen to their runs, or just a few feet.  No excuses, please!

The dogs must be on county property at all times when being walked.  They cannot be walked IN the street or across the street.

Smoking is not allowed while walking dogs.

**********************************************************

TO ALL VOLUNTEERS:

If you see a dog limping, notice a lump, blood in the stool, etc., anything out of the ordinary, or if there is an incident with the dog, be sure to notify the supervisors, document the incident, and put it into the dog's file, keeping a copy for yourself.

********************************************************

Dog Walking Schedule:

Please check the dog-walking schedule below.
There are many days and time slots with little or no coverage.
Please e-mail me with the days and times you are able to cover.
If no one can cover, the dogs will either not get out in the morning or have to go back inside early on those days.

The minimum number of walkers needed by 9:00 a.m. is two in order to handle the task of getting dogs out for their first morning walk.

Volunteers are really needed early in the morning, 9:00 a.m. every day!  Even if  you can only help for a half hour or an hour, it would help.
The dogs are color coded.  New volunteers may NOT walk Red dogs.  Please pay attention to the color coding and the cage cards.  Red walkers' names in red type.
***************************
Important:  Please do not sign up for a shift if you aren't sure you can make it!  Other volunteers come in if there isn't enough coverage.  Some people have signed up for shifts and have been either late or not shown up at all.  We really need at least two people early in the morning--9:00--to get everyone out.

FOSTER HELP NEEDED!!!
From Susan:
We are looking for volunteers to foster cats that need medical attention.  Medicine is usually administered from between 10-14 days.  This is not a very difficult thing to do.  You need a separate room to keep the cat away from your pets.

**********************************************************

KITTEN FOSTERS NEEDED

If interested in helping out, please contact the shelter at socaf@ochd.org.

From Susan:

To all volunteers who wish to socialize with the cats when I am not there, PLEASE take only one cat out at a time.  Cats that should not be taken out have an X with a circle around the X.  These cats need time to adjust to the shelter.
Thank You, Susan
