Pre-Thursday Notes from Dave:
To see that wonderful, loving, snugglepitty, doesn't-know-he's-handicapped dog, Casper,get to go home--just so sweet, rewarding. Just really awesome.
I had a chance yesterday as he was heading down the hall for surgery, and I just said, "WAIT!! I gotta kiss him, tell him good luck, won't see him the rest of the day," and thank goodness I did. There goes a real prince, a real neat boy who stole all our hearts. Anybody who got a chance to touch him was touched BY him. Good health, you beautiful boy!!! I can't even type; I'm so glad for him, as all of you are. Being around such tremendous animals, it's hard to ever be in a rut or whatever. Lola, who grabbed afew heartstrings (and sleeves, and leashes!!), gets a terrific sendoff. You miss her for a few days, and another one strolls into your world, and you into theirs. I wonder which one is luckier, that we have the chance to help them, to meet them, or that they fell into the best shelter and group of people possible. I've always told my friends when they ask, "How you can do it? Isn't it sad? Don't you feel bad when a dog (or cat) gets put down? You can't save everyone, etc." You all know the questions and stuff. I've had the fortune in two years here to meet a THOUSAND great dogs; now you tell me? Who gets to do what we do??
The pay ain't great, but gee whiz, ya just can't beat the BENEFITS!!! Right? Dave
Thursday's Cool Breezes and Notes
Martha Windisch has graciously offered to hold dog-training sessions for the volunteers who walk dogs at the shelter. The sessions will be held on May 14 or June 17. If you would like a little help with understanding dogs' body language, help with getting the dogs in and out of their cages, etc., let me know and I will pass your information along to Martha. These sessions would be held at 10:30 a.m. on those dates.

Well, you know how when you open the blog or email, and you start to slowly scroll down the page, and you see EARS you recognize and almost tip you chair over jumping up, because YOU KNOW THAT FACE that is unfurling right before you, followed by the words we DREAM of...... "So and SO got adopted." Except it's never "so and so"--It's much more personal than that. It's that dog we walked in the rain, or sat with on the benches or in his or her run, or bathed and watched the dirt roll off, because he's (fill in the blanks: deaf, old, dirty, blind, filthy, scrawny, banged up, abandoned, in pain, sick, full of fleas (for the time being. that is), so sad, frightened, unsure, nervous, damaged emotionally or physically, or just in need of human contact and love. I'm not crying; it's the darn POLLEN!! That's my story and I'm sticking to it!

Thursday's Cool Breezes and Notes
What a decent day this turned out to be, weatherwise, plus with Bear on the move with Erma and JoJo, heading to north Jersey. Good for the Bear !! And Austin was out the door skedaddle, at 11:00 am to his foster home. See ya not-so-little guy!! He'll get the training a young, smart, gorgeous dog like him needs. Had a terific long Soco/Poco walk, and another good Bella and Baby Girl, who is a very good gal, Just a bit flinchy if you go right over her head, but other than that, she tolerated all the good , rough backrubs and sidescrubs I could give her.
The run cover work continues with #4 being worked on (How long did it take to build the Eiffel Tower? Just asking.)
HEY!! There are 3 walkables on B side: the sweet German Shepherd pup, Cinco, and whoa!! Lookit the white American Bully mix! I named him 'Augie Dawgie". It kinda fits. What a mashed potato he is!! 6-7 month old Pupperoni. Gosh, a smooshdoodle, and you know what I mean!! Also, the lovely Maggie, all black, 11 months old, a ringer for our old friend and alumni, Natalia!!Very sweet, loves Augie, of COURSE!!! His face is soooo smoochable. Try not to wear his facefur tooo much with all the loving!! I got mine in today!!! GET YOUR OWN!!!
Good work all around today Ken, Pat, Carol, Carolyn, Erma, Joanna, and Connie--who got Austin set up with his foster mom--Jen B, and I think Pat D who I passed on the way home. I saw her cool yellow mini Cooper whizzing by (or was that some kid's skateboard??) That car should have a wind-up key on the roof, you know what i mean?? Pat, get one so we can suction cup it on!! Hahaha.
Joanne got some photos of the new pups on B block, like about 4,000. How do you stop taking pics of good dogs?? You run out of sim card memory!!! That's how!!!
I was kissing Austin adios, and Connie laughingly said, "No dog kissing," until I explained, "I'm DDD!!! I'M DOG DROOL DEPENDENT!!! " Ain't we all!!!!

I won’t be reviewing the shelter rules since I’m not a volunteer dog walker and cannot be relied on to get them correct (however I do know that two leashes are required and no smoking while walking dogs – of course!) – what I don’t know are where people are allowed to walk and not allowed to walk (except county property is okay – but don’t know where that is – my guess is that the people who walk dogs do know this and that this is included in the volunteer training on the Thursdays). I will be covering training – 1. training to improve the dogs’ adoptability, 2. training (and management methods and tools) to help manage the dog (i.e. when getting the dog in and out of the runs and when going through doorways), 3. Some help with leash walking issues (i.e. how to encourage/teach dogs to walk on loose leash), 4. Some training/management that could help with unruly dogs – i.e. dogs that jump up, bite the leash, etc., 5. a discussion of equipment – i.e. types of leashes and collars (only a discussion – people like what they like – but, some knowledge on equipment pros and cons and safety would not hurt).

Everyone knows we have a great deaf pup by the name of Casper at the shelter that needs adoption or rescue. In his chart, I've added an article on the myths and pros of adopting a deaf animal. If anyone would like to read it and perhaps educate yourself on deaf dogs, it's a very informative read. Also, if anyone does comes in and adopts Casper, please give them the article. It has very helpful hints!!
The next FUND RAISING EVENT will be June 23rd at the shelter--JUNE JAMBOREE!! Anyone wishing to help with the event, or has some ideas for fund raising please call me, Connie at 609-698-4833!! Thanks so much!
I will also be posting some outside community outings that will need volunteers to attend and assist with. I know we have one in Viking Village, and also the Barnegat High School is doing the play 101 Dalmatians and has invited us to set up outside and promote our group.
When I get confirmation from Dottie, I will post at the shelter.

All new walkers may walk green dogs on their own once they have gone through orientation. New walkers may walk yellow dogs once they have been with a red walker and told by the red walker they are okay to move on.
Green walkers please look for volunteers with the red dot on their badge. They will help you with anything you need. You may always call me if you run into a problem or have any concerns. Fran - 609-660-0110

It has been asked of us volunteers to not come to the shelter during Rabies clinic. They are always so busy during one of these events, and since we cant walk dogs during this time it would be great if we were just there from 8:30 to 10:30 and then again after at 1:00. I know I was there one day and saw the madness and well I couldn't get out the door fast enough!!!! CRAZY BUSY!!!

All dogs need to be walked with two leashes at all times, whether they are being walked from the pen to their runs, or just a few feet. No excuses, please!
The dogs must be on county property at all times when being walked. They cannot be walked IN the street or across the street.
Smoking is not allowed while walking dogs.

TO ALL VOLUNTEERS:
If you see a dog limping, notice a lump, blood in the stool, etc., anything out of the ordinary, or if there is an incident with the dog, be sure to notify the supervisors, document the incident, and put it into the dog's file, keeping a copy for yourself.

Dog Walking Schedule:
Please check the dog-walking schedule below.
There are many days and time slots with little or no coverage.
Please e-mail me with the days and times you are able to cover.
If no one can cover, the dogs will either not get out in the morning or have to go back inside early on those days.
The minimum number of walkers needed by 8:30 a.m. is two in order to handle the task of getting dogs out for their first morning walk.
Volunteers are really needed early in the morning, 8:30 a.m. every day! Even if you can only help for a half hour or an hour, it would help.
The dogs are color coded. New volunteers may NOT walk Red dogs. Please pay attention to the color coding and the cage cards. Red walkers' names in red type.

Important: Please do not sign up for a shift if you aren't sure you can make it! Other volunteers come in if there isn't enough coverage. Some people have signed up for shifts and have been either late or not shown up at all. We really need at least two people early in the morning--8 or 8:30--to get everyone out.

The Friends of the Southern Ocean County Animal Shelter

The mission statement of our group is to offer an additional avenue of care
for the animals that the Shelter cannot cope with. These are the animals that
have catastrophic physical problems or illnesses which need special medical care.
Animals that would otherwise have died or been euthanized and would have never
known the happiness of a loving home.
We also provide much needed support to the shelter. We help take care of physical
needs such as an industrial size washing machine, blankets, food, halters,
and an outdoor cat cage. We also provided swinging "doggy doors" for all
the kennels at the shelter, thereby making it much more cost effective.
In the summer the heat stays out and in the winter the heat stays in.
These are just a small sample of the needs of the shelter we provide.
We are a local to LBI and Manahawkin organization. Our founders are
very active in the Southern Ocean County Animal Shelter and decided
they needed to more. So Dottie and Eleanor got together and made a
commitment to do what they could to make the animals lives at the
shelter as good as they could be, until they found a loving home.

FOSTER HELP NEEDED!!!

We are looking for volunteers to foster cats that need medical attention. Medicine is usually administered from between 10-14 days. This is not a very difficult thing to do. You need a separate room to keep the cat away from your pets.
